"A pitch-perfect blend of the best of the old and the best of the new--all the traditional strengths and charms are here, with a fresh and relevant 21st-century edge. I loved it."--Lee Child A taut and ambitious police procedural debut introducing Detective Sergeant Adam Tyler, a cold case reviewer who lands a high-profile murder investigation only to find the main suspect is a recent one-night stand . . . When financier Gerald Cartwright disappeared from his home six years ago, it was assumed he'd gone on the run from his creditors. When a skeleton is found bricked up in the cellar of Cartwright's mansion, it becomes clear Gerald never left alive. As the sole representative of South Yorkshire's Cold Case Review Unit, Detective Sergeant Adam Tyler is not expected to get results, but he knows this is the case that might finally kickstart his floundering career. Luckily, he already has a suspect. Unluckily, that suspect is Cartwright's son, the man Tyler slept with the night before. To further complicate matters, tied up in his investigation are an elderly woman with dementia who's receiving mysterious threats referencing a past she can't remember, and an ambitious young Muslim constable seeking to prove herself on a force of good old boys. Someone in the city knows exactly what happened to Gerald. Someone who is watching from the shadows. Someone with an unhealthy affinity with fire . . .

Not my usual book topic, but this was last nights moon. The red is from the smoke from the #walbridge fire. The fires and worry are making it hard to read.

All of our local libraries are shut but have helpfully extended all loans to August. The tagged book was my only loan at the time of lockdown.
However, several of our libraries also contain family centres which is where I‘ve been having my midwife appointments. It SO tempting to help myself to some of these lovely neglected books and give them a home until August!

quietlycuriouskate Oh goodness, that must take some willpower! 5y

alisiakae I used to read the BBC website all the time, until a few years ago when it started automatically redirecting me to the US version instead of the UK site. 5y

This was the first police procedural I have read, though I love watching then on T.V.😊 I really liked it, there were some interesting characters, good atmosphere, nice pacing/plot unfolding and I look forward to reading the rest of the series.

I'd love recommendations for other police procedurals while I wait for next in series to come out.

I won an ARC in #goodreadsgiveaways- released 2/25/2020. A big thank you to Goodreads and Putnam for ARC

Ruthiella Try the beloved Three Pines books by Louise Penny... They are sort of a mashup between procedural and cozy mystery. 5y
RachelAmphlett I love police procedurals but I‘d missed this one so I‘ve stacked it! 5y
Maude @Ruthiella Thanks, I will add it now :) 5y

OMGOSH! Just read this in 2 days.

It's very rare I find a new British crime author to get excited over and one with an LGBT spin on it. Was soooooo good!!!!!

Is there anything better than getting book mail? I won, Firewatching, in #goodreadsgiveaways 🤗 A Natural Disaster, was written and published by a friend and is available on Amazon. I really want to start making my own bitters for cocktails so I ordered a book, dropper bottles, the Fuggler to supervise ☺

I love this book. It‘s so involved, with a large cast of interlinked characters and so well plotted it keeps you completely engrossed from start to finish as more and more of the story unfolds. There‘s murder, arson, missing wives, abuse and even a potential romance.

Adam is a great character, dealing with casual and not so casual homophobia in his own way…and dogged in his determination to find the perpetrators of crime.

A page turning detective noir with an LGBT lead. Detective Adam Tyler investigates the murder of a wealthy financier and becomes involved with the victim's son. As he sinks deeper into the case, he uncovers family secrets that have long been buried. For fans who love police procedural stories or enjoy novels like The Cuckoo is Calling.
