The Woman Who Gave Birth to Rabbits
The Woman Who Gave Birth to Rabbits: Stories | Emma Donoghue
11 posts | 7 read | 16 to read
Emma Donoghue vividly brings to life stories inspired by her discoveries of fascinating, hidden scraps of the past. Here an engraving of a woman giving birth to rabbits, a plague ballad, surgical case notes, theological pamphlets, and an articulated skeleton are ingeniously fleshed out into rollicking, full-bodied fictions. Whether she's spinning the tale of an English soldier tricked into marrying a dowdy spinster, a Victorian surgeon's attempts to "improve" women, a seventeenth-century Irish countess who ran away to Italy disguised as a man, or an "undead" murderess returning for the maid she left behind to be executed in her place, Emma Donoghue brings to her tales a colorful, elegant prose filled with the sights and smells and sounds of the period. She summons the ghosts of those men and women who counted for nothing in their own day and brings them to unforgettable life in fiction.

I loved Emma‘s other collection of historically based short stories (Astray) and this didn‘t disappoint either. I really enjoyed the format of both: first the creative fictional fleshing out of factually based characters and/or situations, followed by nonfiction blurbs that inspired each story. All unique and intriguing tidbits from history. 👍🏾👍🏾

batsy I really enjoyed this one, too. 5y

Ok, everything is perfect at this moment - except for one tiny omission - I didn‘t grab my book before I got into the hammock and it‘s a lot of work to get out. 😜

SamAnne LOL. Done that. 5y

2 finds today. I LOVED/ADORED Donoghue‘s short story collection Astray, so I picked the tagged book up without hesitation.

I might be the last reader on earth to finally pick up a copy of Housekeeping. I‘ve had Gilead on my shelf for years, but didn‘t want to read it before this one.

Cathythoughts Look forward to your thoughts ♥️👍🏻 6y
Tamra @Cathythoughts have you read either? 6y

Cathythoughts It‘s a date ♥️👍🏻 6y
DivineDiana I read and loved Gilead. Didn‘t know that I should read Housekeeping first! 🤔 5y
Tamra @DivineDiana it‘s just a quirk of mine - I don‘t think it is a series. I just thought it would be interesting to read Housekeeping first because Gilead came out decades later. 5y

I love all of Emma Donoghue's short story collections! I'm quite partial to her historical fiction stories where she finds an interesting, quirky or queer piece of archival information and builds a story around it. I do love her contemporary fiction as well. 💗📚 #booktober #shortstories #queerbooks

This was a great collection of short stories. Very different to Room, in context and in style, this nonetheless drew me in. I loved the premise that Donoghue had based each story on scraps of forgotten historical information. 'The Fox on the Line', 'Night Vision' and 'Cured' were standouts for me.
