The Electric Michelangelo
The Electric Michelangelo | Sarah Hall
8 posts | 9 read | 9 to read
On the windswept front of Morecambe Bay, Cy Parks spends his childhood years first in a guest house for consumptives run by his mother and then as apprentice to alcoholic tattoo-artist Eliot Riley. Thirsty for new experiences, he departs for America and finds himself in the riotous world of the Coney Island boardwalk, where he sets up his own business as 'The Electric Michelangelo'. In this carnival environment of roller-coasters and freak-shows, Cy becomes enamoured with Grace, a mysterious immigrant and circus performer who commissions him to cover her entire body in tattooed eyes. Hugely atmospheric, exotic and familiar, The Electric Michelangelo is a love story and an exquisitely rendered portrait of seaside resorts on opposite sides of the Atlantic by one of the most uniquely talented novelists of her generation.

Only 2 books left now to complete #BookSpinBonanza! 😁 @TheAromaofBooks

The subject matter of a tattoo artist in Coney Island intrigued me from the start, but this book was just barely a pick for me. I liked most of the characters, and I loved the setting, but at times the prose seemed far too ambitious and rambling for the story.

TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!! Down to the wire!!! 5y

I found this such a different read to my expectations. It was beautifully written, loads of intense descriptions. The characters are easy to imagine yet retain a mystery.
Very good read 😍😍

Wow! What a cover and a title 🤩🤩
Another box of books to browse through on another daily walk. And this is my find.
I've started it (alongside my current book club read which I'm not appreciating) and it's very enticing so far. I've no idea what will unfold...

BarbaraBB I‘ve never heard of it, while I‘m a sucker for Man Booker nominated books! Looking forward to your thoughts! 5y

I'm excited for this one!! Tattooed ladies, sea-side carnivals, and Sarah Hall's tumbling, visceral prose!

I can't say that I've officially moved until I sign up for my library card, so I guess it's official! I have wanted to have a card to this library since I was a wee thing, so my excitement over registering this morning was pretty significant.

Chelsey What library is it? 9y
