Better with Books: 500 Diverse Books to Ignite Empathy and Encourage Self-Acceptance in Tweens and Teens | Melissa Hart
6 posts | 1 read | 11 to read
Needed now more than ever: a guide that includes 500 diverse contemporary fiction and memoir recommendations for preteens and teens with the goal of inspiring greater empathy for themselves, their peers, and the world around them. As young people are diagnosed with anxiety and depression in increasing numbers, or dealing with other issues that can isolate them from family and friendssuch as bullying, learning disabilities, racism, or homophobiacharacters in books can help them feel less alone. And just as important, reading books that feature a diverse range of real-life topics helps generate openness, empathy, and compassion in all kids. Better with Books is a valuable resource for parents, teachers, librarians, therapists, and all caregivers who recognize the power of literature to improve young readers lives. Each chapter explores a particular issue affecting preteens and teens today and includes a list of recommended related booksall published within the last decade. Recommendations are grouped by age: those appropriate for middle-grade readers and those for teens. Reading lists are organized around: Adoption and foster care Body image Immigration Learning challenges LGBTQIA+ youth Mental health Nature and environmentalism Physical disability Poverty and homelessness Race and ethnicity Religion and spirituality

The APA (American Psychological Association) wrote an article in July about the importance of kids reading diverse books. https://www.apa.org/monitor/2025/07-08/fighting-book-bans-censorship?utm_source=...

IriDas Had that conversation with a conservative acquaintance once who was a reader and espoused that idea that reading makes a person more sympathetic toward others, but she hated all the “out groups” and absolutely refused to read about anything different than her own worldview. Reading doesn‘t help unless we read broadly. 4w
ncsufoxes @IriDas I was just having a conversation with our 16 yo about more diverse stories & movies. He was talking about how the new Percy Jackson series has more diversity than the books. We went over who writes the stories & what does that mean for kids that aren‘t white to not see themselves as heroes. I was saying to him it‘s only been in recent years that there has been a push for students to read more diverse stories & authors. He is reading I Am 4w
ncsufoxes Malala for English right now. When his older brother was a Senior in HS (2022) for his English class he took a trial course that they were piloting (this was in San Diego) on diverse stories. He loved it. I wish that all schools would do this. He learned a lot but also these are frequent discussions we have in our house, so he excelled in the class. It makes me so sad to know that so many people are fearful & unwilling to listen & learn from 4w

ncsufoxes others. But that is how my MIL is, she doesn‘t want to think outside her narrow narrative. I love all the stories coming out & learning so much that I didn‘t know about. The problem is I can‘t keep up with all the books I want to read in the amount of time I have in a day to read. So, alas I keep buying too many books. 4w
IriDas @ncsufoxes That program sounds great. When I was a kid in school if we read a book by woman (white, of course) it was a big deal. lol. As for too many books, I‘m going to make my kids read them to me when I‘m old and in a home. ;) 4w
AnnCrystal Having these conversations both in schools and at home is so important. Bravo 📚👏🏼🥲✊🏼💝. 4w

Read at your own risk. With empathy-building topics including mental health, physical disability, religion, race, and more, I added 65 MG & YA books to my TBR.

I feel like I hit the jackpot finding this book today. Split into 11 topics to build empathy with lists of books for preteens and teens published in the last decade, I‘ve already added 11 books to my TBR after the first chapter. I think I‘ll be pulling some of these for future #MGBuddyRead and #YABuddyRead reads.

Day one of #bfcr2 and I did okay! Came up four minutes short of my sleep goal but if I hit it right off the bat it wouldn‘t be a challenge, right?
Steps on the other hand...my #fitwizards buddies are in a work week challenge. That makes a difference 😊
Book one (tagged) is almost complete—I stay up late to read, but sleep needs to improve so hopefully I‘ll finish in the morning!

Clwojick Way to go! This is a great start! 🙌🏻 and I love that you included sleep into your goals. My sleep is all over the place. Some days 4 hours, some days 9 😅 6y

Everyone has that one book they should have written .... right!?

Well, this is that book for me! Why didn‘t I write this book? 😔

What book do you wish you would have written first?
