Memories of Ash
Memories of Ash | Intisar Khanani
7 posts | 9 read | 2 to read
In the year since she cast her sunbolt, Hitomi has recovered only a handful of memories. But the truths of the past have a tendency to come calling, and an isolated mountain fastness can offer only so much shelter. When the High Council of Mages summons Brigit Stormwind to stand trial for treason, Hitomi knows her mentor won't return--not with Arch Mage Blackflame behind the charges. Armed only with her magic and her wits, Hitomi vows to free her mentor from unjust imprisonment. She must traverse spell-cursed lands and barren deserts, facing powerful ancient enchantments and navigating bitter enmities, as she races to reach the High Council. There, she reunites with old friends, planning a rescue equal parts magic and trickery. If she succeeds, Hitomi will be hunted the rest of her life. If she fails, she'll face the ultimate punishment: enslavement to the High Council, her magic slowly drained until she dies.

Still with the fritters, me. These ones are made from leftover mashed potatoes.

I‘m pleased to report I‘ve finally clicked with MEMORIES OF ASH! I‘m just past the halfway mark, and I hope I‘ll be able to finish it today. Just gotta let my Kobo recharge.

Lreads Those fritters look so yummy! 5y
xicanti @QuietlyLaura they‘re one of my favourite breakfasts! I make them whenever there‘s leftover mashed potatoes on offer. 5y

Shrimp for supper! I looooooove shrimp.

I‘m in a weird place with MEMORIES OF ASH: I enjoy it while I‘m reading it, but I have trouble picking it back up again. Looks like I‘m not quite ready for longer prose fiction unless it‘s totally engrossing. I‘ll keep at it because I DO want to read this and I doubt I‘ll come back to it if I take a break, but I should‘ve waited a bit longer before I made the attempt.

Okay; I think I‘m ready for prose fiction again. MEMORIES OF ASH is the second book in a series I started ages ago, but so far it works well as a standalone with a prequel available for them what wants it.

Mehso-so

A fun follow up, though much slower than the first. Maybe it was because I was so used to the lightning pace of the last one, but the middle of the book dragged for me. Still Hitomi as ever was an amazing lead, her world felt true and mesmerizing. Loved how she brought such a dynamic cast of characters to her. Excited to see where she goes next! ★★★☆☆.

Pickpick

MEMORIES OF ASH by Intisar Khanani is an uplifting story that challenges current trends in fantasy. Memories of Ash falls roughly into two sections. The first part is pure adventure. After Hitomi's mentor is unjustly arrested and taken for trial, Hitomi faces a choice between staging a rescue or hiding from those working against her mentor. The second half is more of a heist story. I loved it to bits and can't wait for the sequel.

MOA was like being hit by brick in the face. Khanani has done it again, stole my heart with her immersive storyline and strong female lead. Her detail writing and flow kept me hooked from page one to the end. It slowly gives world details such as geography, politics and the world‘s rich history.

NihilSedTempus I have already burned, and this pain, this potion, is but an echo of what I chose with my sunbolt…” Fave quote of the book!! 9y
