5 posts | 2 read | 1 to read
Celebrate prairie life with this delicious combination of more than 100 recipes from Karlynn Johnston, bestselling author of Flapper Pie and a Blue Prairie Sky. Discover new and nostalgic prairie favorites, perfect for family dinners, potluck parties, picnic lunches, and gatherings of all kinds. Karlynn Johnston, beloved blogger behind The Kitchen Magpie, knows first-hand that meals made with love--cooked with comfort in mind, and filled with real ingredients--are greeted with the biggest smiles. In The Prairie Table, she captures the magic of families crowded around the kitchen table; of social gatherings, with picnic benches groaning under the weight of a multitude of dishes; of food eaten in wide-open spaces under sunshine-filled blue skies. Featuring more than 100 recipes--from salads to vegetable dishes; home-baked breakfasts to easy main meals; crowd-pleasing appetizers to portable desserts; a chapter dedicated to the Ukrainian heritage of the prairies, and much more!--The Prairie Table is filled with Karlynn's approachable and tasty dishes. Paired with gorgeous photography and candid stories, every recipe in this book can easily be cut in half for a smaller family meal or doubled for a large event, and there are even quick "cheater" recipes for when you are in a hurry. You can then complement each dish with the array of cocktails and mocktails featured in the final chapter of the book, written by special guest and popular Kitchen Magpie contributor, Karlynn's husband Mike (aka Mr. Kitchen Magpie). Whether it's Grandma Ellen's Cold Picnic Barbecue Fried Chicken, perfect for a hot summer day; Sweet and Sour Meatballs to bring to your community potluck; Mango, Avocado, and Arugula Salad that even the pickiest of eaters will love; Pia Colada Sour Cream Squares for unexpected visitors; or pitcher-friendly cocktails like Strawberry Rhubarb Gin Fizz, The Prairie Table brings quintessential prairie cooking to kitchens everywhere.

My paternal heritage is Polish & Slovak and I grew up around lots of Ukrainians. I didn‘t realize what strong opinions I held about traditional Central European recipes until I bought this #cookbook. As in, there‘s one right way to make things. Case in point: beet rolls. The beet leaf must entirely enwrap the bread dough, place them snugly in a casserole, then pour cream over & bake. Does that sound anything like the travesty illustrated?

Lindy Other travesties: instant potato flakes instead of potato water & mashed potato in the perogy dough; no cottage cheese filling option for perogies, no sour holopchi (only sweet cabbage rolls), nalysnyky served dry rather than baked in cream, borscht made with meat... aaaak! Noooooo! (edited) 5y

AmyRebecca Seriously??? Instant potato flakes?? Lol 🤢 5y
lynneamch Yikes! My dad's parents came from Ukraine and I try to pass food traditions on to my grandkids. Found this one to be an interesting memoir, history lesson, and good recipes 5y
Lindy @lynneamch Thanks for the recommendation. It looks like I can get a copy at my local library. 👍 5y

Pickpick

Upbeat recipe headers, chatty page-long chapter intros & photos that feature the author‘s mid-20th c vintage serving dishes prompt me to give a pick to this #cookbook featuring “Crowd-Pleasing Recipes to Bring People Together.” On the other hand, Johnston isn‘t fond of vegetables—so she wraps them in bacon—not a good match for a vegetarian. She adds notable amounts of sugar to savoury recipes. And her Ukrainian section deserves a separate post.

Lindy Another example of not being vegetarian-friendly: dinner buns recipe includes both lard and chicken fat. 😕 5y

Earlier this week, my book club discussed a #cookbook by a local food blogger, Karlynn Johnston. At a potluck supper we talked about the recipes we tried. As I sat down to write a review for Litsy today, I realized that 4 of our menu items are pictured on the cover: perogies, pumpkin pull-apart biscuits, devilled eggs & lemon cheesecake bars. We also had parsnip bake, dill & brown sugar roasted carrots, tropical coleslaw, & medivnyk (honey cake).

I tried out a couple of recipes from this #cookbook: Spicy Molasses Oatmeal Raisin Cookies and Black-Bottom Butter Tart Squares. The samples in the photo are going to my neighbours and the rest are going to a one-day-early Canada Day celebration with friends later today.

Lindy @EchoLogical @TrishB @Redwritinghood My sweetie has suggested that we keep all the butter tart squares for ourselves, instead of taking them to the party. #successfulrecipe 5y
EchoLogical @Lindy I agree with sweetie! Lol. 5y
Lindy @EchoLogical I have a strategy to keep my weight within limits: give away as much baking as possible. 😉 5y
