How to Suppress Women's Writing
How to Suppress Women's Writing | Joanna Russ
12 posts | 12 read | 35 to read
If certain people are not suppose to have the ability to produce 'great' literature, and if this supposition is one of the means used to keep such people in their place, the ideal situation (socially speaking) is one in which such people are prevented from producing any literature at all.

By examining the progression of bad faith arguments used to belittle writing done by women, each progressively more desperate/illogical, Russ shows how flawed and dangerous much critical analysis of women‘s work can be. As someone who doesn‘t do a lot of academic reading, this was a slough in parts. However, Russ makes excellent points regarding the literary canon, college syllabi, and cultural values- and this was written in ‘83! ⬇️

psalva While much has changed in the publishing industry, there are still gaps in racial diversity and pay rates, as well as in syllabi around the world. Overall, this was an excellent read, if a little dense for me at times, and is, unfortunately, still very relevant. 14mo

I‘ve been in a bit of a reading slump the past few weeks, focusing on other things. Tonight I have some free time and I‘ve decided to check some books off of my currently reading list. I hope to finish the tagged at the very least. 🤞Does anyone else feel more motivated when you post on Litsy or is it just me?

Holy wow did this take a lot of concentration to get through. It's basically criticism about historical anti-woman literary criticism and literature. It didn't touch on intersectionality enough for my liking, but I'm not docking it points, because it did touch on it, and wherever not referenced, I could assume the intersectional repercussions. The copyright is 1983.

batsy I loved this a lot. The anger, the energy. 5y

I loved seeing people's posts yesterday for #internationalwomensday

I meant to post something too but work was super busy and completely took my energy. So here's my post now, a small selection of women authors from my shelves. I've read the stack on the left, the stack on the right is still tbr.

This book is amazing and so well written. Russ is a white woman, so she focuses on the suppression of white women‘s writing, but touches on the fact that a lot of the same techniques are used to suppress the works of people of color and homosexuals (and artists and composers, in addition to writers). Her author‘s note is fully worth reading, as she provides a list of recommended books by black women.

Just read this excerpt and now I need to read the whole book that is apparently still relevant 30 years later.... https://lithub.com/how-to-suppress-womens-writing-she-only-wrote-one-good-book/ #tbr

Weaponxgirl Yup, can't believe these conversations are still going on in such a demeaning way. Makes me even more determined to read mostly books by anyone other than a straight white man 7y

One more passage because I've never once considered this and my (very liberal) lib arts college taught these women in exactly this way.

brendanmleonard This is a fantastic book; it came up again in my life in a debate about fan fiction. I need to read it again! 8y
Kelly @brendanmleonard I am glad I picked it up. So good and disgustingly STILL relevant on so many levels. 8y
balletbookworm Okay, I think I need to read this. 📚 8y

I found a copy of this, finally, in a bookstore near Cleveland and it is WRECKING ME. Written in 1983, could have been published today and not been one iota less relevant.
