After the Sickness has killed off her parents, and the bombs have fallen on the last safe cities, Monster emerges from the Arctic vault which has kept her alive. When she washes up on the coast of Scotland, everyone she knows is dead, and she believes she is alone in an empty world. Monster begins the long walk south, scavenging and learning the contours of this familiar land made new. Slowly, piece by piece, she begins to rebuild a life. Until, one day, she finds a girl: another survivor, feral, and ready to be taught all that Monster knows. But the lessons the girl learns are not always those Monster means to teach . . . Inspired by Robinson Crusoe and Frankenstein, My Name Is Monster is a novel about power, about the things that society leaves imprinted on us when the rules no longer apply, and about the strength and the danger of a mothers love.

Mehso-so

I've read a fair bit of apoc-fic recently & some of the tropes are starting to feel a little stale. And the premise of this one is also far from original - last person left alive, doing what needs to be done to survive. It's the relationship between Mother & Monster that kept me intrigued. The dual narrative didn't work well, Monster's POV being less engaging, the character being less developed. And some of the events were less than convincing.

I wasn‘t quite sure what to expect from this dystopian debut novel. Written simply, it‘s an engaging read split into two parts. The first section comes from the titular character‘s view in the wake of war and a Sickness that has taken out the rest of humanity. A survivor, she makes a long trek and eventually discovers the world isn‘t as empty as she had thought. Parts of this one feel a bit implausible but I‘m sure this will start discussion!

The story of a woman who survives 'the sickness' and is alone until she meets another. Beautifully written. I enjoyed reading the character perspectives and how differently they viewed their own side of the relationship. I felt the story lacked something. Excitement perhaps? There was so much that could've been done with the post apocalyptic scenario but wasn't.

Somewhere between a pick and a so-so, I‘m leaning towards so-so because I have issues with a major event in the book! That I‘m obviously not going to spoil!!
I‘m assuming it‘s YA as it‘s very simplistically written and the author thinks teenagers aren‘t going to question the major event (apologies to all the teenagers who are as frustrated with it as me!).

What an epic story. Really clever storytelling and lots of things to make you wonder - what was the sickness? Who were the men on the bridge? It seemed to say a lot without actually saying it. I think I‘ll be thinking about this one for a while.
