Bluebeard | Kurt Vonnegut
Kurt Vonnegut has surpassed even his own giddy heights of hilariously bitter irony in Bluebeard. It is a novel so funny and yet so terribly serious that you will read it - then reconsider your own life.

All of Vonnegut's trademarks are here in this fictional autobiography of the equally fictional abstract expressionist painter Rabo Karabekian - the narrative shifts back and forth through time; he reveals exactly what's going to happen early in the story; and the trademark mix of cynicism and aching sincerity. Full of profound insights on war, art, feminism, and death/resurrection, and also laugh out loud funny, as usual.

Leftcoastzen What a beautiful review! 10mo
Ruthiella This was the first Vonnegut I ever read. 10mo
Suet624 I‘ll try to find this one. Thanks for the review. 9mo

My favorite restaurant in Indianapolis is inspired by Vonnegut‘s work. Cocktails take their names from his novels and the walls are lined with typewriters and books. The food is incredible, and the menu changes every day. If you ever find yourself in Indy visiting the Kurt Vonnegut Museum, don‘t miss eating here. It‘s a gem.

tjwill Adding to my bucket list! 1y

Husband, father, veteran, painter, and recluse. This is the story of Rabo Karabekian and the life he fell into, his losses and his regrets.

I think it might be time to say that Vonnegut just might not be for me. This was very slow paced, & I find it difficult to get into a book where I so strongly dislike the POV character. This also felt very blunt in its critiques of American culture and its ending message. I did appreciate the end. 🌕🌕🌑🌑🌑

5feet.of.fury Vonnegut is not for me either. It might be art. But it‘s not enjoyable. 2y

A random shot of books I've been meaning to read but have yet to get around to. The sight fills me with a bittersweet sense of optimism and regret.

Ruthiella Main Street is fantastic. 😀 Bluebeard was my first Vonnegut but I remember nothing about it now except that it was about an artist/painter. (edited) 3y

As usual, Vonnegut has the right idea, and he had it the year I was born.

On my way to visit my parents for Labor Day weekend, and switched to a paper book while #inflight (no reason to listen to an audiobook when you have nothing else to do *while* you listen). The flight attendant gave me two cans of the lime seltzer I asked for. I suspect it's because I'm reading Vonnegut. We Vonnegut readers are like that about each other 😊

“What will be found written after the name Rabo Karabekian in the Big Book on Judgment Day?

Soldier: Excellent.
Husband and Father: Floparroo.
Serious artist: Floparroo”

Loved this autobiography of the fictional painter Rabo Karabekian (who briefly appears in Breakfast of Champions and Deadeye Dick). In typical KV fashion, it touches on morality, war, and the human condition. And, of course, there‘s that dark humor I so adore.

Leftcoastzen Love him so much! 7y

Just a short stack of books I read in college. I took Lit classes, especially Modern American Fiction, as an excuse to read for pleasure. Here are just a couple great authors I met along the way😍❤️😍❤️😍

Reviewsbylola I remember reading portions of The Crying of Lot 49 in a postmodernism class in college. 8y
Sweettartlaura @Reviewsbylola Pynchon is an interesting read. I haven't read much by him since college; when I have, I found myself wishing I was reading it in class to catch it all. 8y

Chose this because it is the last Vonnegut that I read. Occasionally you find an author where you ration his books, reading slowly because you know that the supply of their books is limited. Vonnegut is such an author for me - an author who speaks to me with every book.
