Four Souls
Four Souls | Louise Erdrich
18 posts | 17 read | 1 reading | 9 to read
After taking her mother's name, Four Souls, for strength, the strange and compelling Fleur Pillager walks from her Ojibwe reservation to the cities of Minneapolis and Saint Paul. She is seeking restitution from and revenge on the lumber baron who has stripped her tribes land. But revenge is never simple, and her intentions are complicated by her dangerous compassion for the man who wronged her. In the world of interconnected novels by Louise Erdrich, Four Souls is most closely linked to Tracks. All these works continue and elaborate the intricate story of life on a Native American reservation peopled by saints and false saints, heroes and sinners, clever fools and tenacious women. Four Souls reminds us of the deep spirituality and the ordinary humanity of this world, and is as beautiful and lyrical as anything Louise Erdrich has written. This P.S. edition features an extra 16 pages of insights into the book, including author interviews, recommended reading, and more.

A brief book that takes us with Fleur as she tries to get revenge and reclaim her land. Told predominantly from the perspectives of her sister in law and Nanapush (who also adds some levity with stories about his antics with Margaret) Fleur remains a enigmatic and compelling character. I am loving dipping in and out of this series this year.

It was a quick read and beautifully written. The story of Fleur Pillager (told from her sister in laws point of view) and her need for revenge - as well as Nanapush and Margaret's 'love' story (more comedic). All the characters are well fleshed out and I can only imagine what reading the whole series would add to this book. The way revenge was handled throughout the book and the way it ends is magnificent. I absolutely loved this book.

Picked this book up from the library for my #AuthorAMonth read. I didn't realize her books were so intertwined so hopefully this is a good read as a stand alone. It's going to be a perfect evening with a book, a blanket and a tea!

bnp This is the first of Erdrich's books I read, and I wanted more when I was done. 2y
Jess861 @bnp I agree - I absolutely loved it and want to read the whole series now! 2y

(So hard to take a picture of a shiny library book.) I really enjoyed this book from the #erdrichmedicinereadalong and look forward to the discussion. We get to see Fleur going off to try to get her land back (often through the point of view of her husband's sister) and get a much deeper look inside the relationship between Nanapush and Margaret, which I loved so much.

Today in odd analogies.

rubyslippersreads I think I first heard of owl pellets in the book Linnets and Valerians, and for years I pictured something neat and tidy, like a medicine capsule. Quite a surprise when I actually saw a real one. 😄🦉 5y
Bertha_Mason @rubyslippersreads I'm hoping to see one in the wild some day :) 5y

Mauser's doctor just diagnosed him with blue balls and advanced semen brain. Astounding.

Bertha_Mason The recommended treatment is not to whack off but to put leeches on his temples to suck the jizz out! Astounding. 😝🤢 5y

I‘ve been looking forward to these two for ages, kind of rationing them out for me while I got through some other things. I don‘t anticipate this being the easiest read ever but I‘m still very excited to read it

And I put my copy of FOUR SOULS in this much larger community book exchange. I love how people actually use most of the boxes I've come across! I've only seen two that were almost bare. Every other one has stuff in it, and the selection's a little different if I pass by it again a few days later.

While Erdrich's lovely prose hooked me straight off, this is one of those times where I admire the book more than I like it. FOUR SOULS has a lot to say about expectations versus outcomes, with an emphasis on revenge, but I found I wanted slightly more than what was on the page.

That could be because this isn't Erdrich's first book with Fleur, Nanapush, and Margaret; something I wish was clear on the cover, as I do own one volume set before this.

xicanti I'm still marking it a Pick for the prose and the admiration. 7y

queerbookreader I've seen both Richard Dawkins and Christopher Hitchens on your shelves. Do you prefer one over the other? Dawkins is one of those super islamophobic atheists online so I haven't wanted to read his books, but I'm wondering if Christopher Hitchens is any better/less shitty about his atheism? I really can't stand most male atheists because they've got such a superiority complex brewing, but I'd like to read some atheist material! 8y
queerbookreader It's like....so many male atheists justify their lack of belief with the fact that women worldwide are oppressed by religion and unequal to men in religion, but then they go around and are sooooo sexist themselves cos they think they're better than everything. It's so annoying!!!! I want to read atheist material but the men in atheism severely exclude women! It's like your boys club isn't any better than how religions treat women lmao 8y
goodbyefrancie @lemonlime799 Honestly, my hubby is the one who reads more from both authors. I have listened to Hitchens and we went to a Dawkins appearance, and I definitely see his superior attitude. I like listening or reading both because they are knowledgeable and intelligent, or at least sound that way. If I were to choose one from what I have read, it would be Hitchens. Hubby says the same. 8y
queerbookreader @goodbyefrancie Okay. Thank you + your hubby! I love all the nonfiction I see in your stacks 😍 8y
goodbyefrancie @lemonlime799 I read and listen to more nonfiction than anything. Huge history/politics need here. 8y

I think this book really has an interesting dual narrative going between a traditional First Nations/Native American and a colonizer. The themes of revenge and how they take a toll on a person in all ways, and the jarring disconnection of attempts at self assimilation are beautifully written.

ClairesReads Love Erdrich- but I haven't read this one. 8y

The local hospital has a book sale on the last Wednesday of every month, so I headed over there early this morning and got this lot for $3. A friend highly recommended Louise Erdrich to me, I've heard great things about HILD and WILL GRAYSON, WILL GRAYSON, and I'm pretty sure I've seen Jo Walton mention R.M. Meluch. THE ILLUSIONISTS was a random pick.
