Lunar Park
Lunar Park | Bret Easton Ellis
Bret Ellis, the narrator of Lunar Park, is a writer whose first novel Less Than Zero catapulted him to international stardom while he was still in college. In the years that followed he found himself adrift in a world of wealth, drugs, and fame, as well as dealing with the unexpected death of his abusive father. After a decade of decadence a chance for salvation arrives; the chance to reconnect with an actress he was once involved with, and their son. But almost immediately his new life is threatened by a freak sequence of events and a bizarre series of murders that all seem to connect to Ellis’s past. His attempts to save his new world from his own demons makes Lunar Park Ellis’s most suspenseful novel. In this chilling tale reality, memoir, and fantasy combine to create not only a fascinating version of this most controversial writer but also a deeply moving novel about love and loss, parents and children, and ultimately forgiveness. From the Trade Paperback edition.

This is a mock memoir, written from the perspective of a 40 year old Bret Easton Ellis as he works through feelings about his previous books and his deceased father, told as a horror story homage to Stephen King — so the ghosts and demons are literal as well as figurative. It sounds like a lot, but I loved it and couldn‘t wait to find out what would happen next. I thought this was a brilliant departure for Ellis.

I was confused at first as I didn‘t know the author and his previous works or past. I don‘t like him & neither does the dog. I trust the dog. The horror is well done. Is he just an old drug addict or is it a demon/haunting?

This book legit frightened me...just last night. Had me fully believing in the supernatural: things were cracking, my place was squeaking, weird crackling sounds; I‘m even (pretty sure?) some kind of breathing sound?? Now I‘m finished with it, thank goodness.

This novel—it‘s brilliant though. In addition to being scary: it‘s like if Ellis was to write a book that was a parody of himself, but it‘s a parody of THAT. Had me cracking up to no end.

For an author whose usual novels are steeped in cynicism and keeping emotions at arm's length- this one is a departure: a fictionalized Ellis tries (somewhat ineptly) to become a better dad to his estranged children in the face of a series of bizarre supernatural events. Written both as an attempt by BEE to understand his own difficult relationship with his father, and as a homage to Stephen King novels #Fathers #Junebookbugs @RealLifeReading

3.5 stars. This book is not like American Psycho, and that's a good thing. If you're looking for more of the same from B.E.E. look elsewhere. Lunar Park is not that. It's sad, it's funny, it's a ghost story (literal and metaphorical). It's about piecing together and losing a grip on family. I enjoyed it a lot, but if you're a die hard for Ellis' nihilism via over the top hedonism and ultra graphic violence, this might not be for you.

This was recommended to me by a friend, so I finished this but it was not my cup of tea... I've never been a horror and this definitely didn't change my mind! Does anyone have any ideas of things that would??? #didntlikeitstillfinished #marchintoreading

Your basic Ellis fair--drugs, white guys with daddy issues, people being awful--with the added bonus of watching said awful white guy fight an evil Furby.
