Having escaped from the eastern European concentration camp where he has spent most of his life, a twelve-year-old boy struggles to cope with an entirely strange world as he flees northward to freedom in Denmark. “[North to Freedom] is, to my mind, the single finest novel ever written for children of about ages 9 to 13.”--School Library Journal

Inspired by @Cinfhen & @Ruthiella here‘s a 1963 book I loved. Our class read this when I was 9? A boy escapes from a concentration camp in an unnamed country - the only life he‘s known is the camp and he has to make his way through small towns and farms trying to find a place he will be safe. It affected me deeply as a kid - although not much violence on the page you‘re aware of how alone and how vulnerable he is.

Reggie Wow!!! We were doing Ramona Quimby books and you were doing concentration camp into the vast alone books!! Jesus. 6y
TrishB This sounds tough 😔 6y
Centique @Reggie I know! And the following year we read The Silver Crown which I loved but it scared me &$@*% 6y

Cinfhen And that was scary to me!!! Your book sounds really tough, Flea!!!!! But I‘d like to read it. 6y
Ruthiella I think kids can often handle tougher material than adults give them credit for! 6y
Centique @Cinfhen I love that book!! 6y
Centique @Ruthiella you‘re totally right. Some of the implications goes over your head - which is just as well. 😊 6y
LeahBergen I‘ve never read this book. 😮 6y
Centique @LeahBergen I remember it with a lot of fondness. Will have to reread to see how it holds up with adult eyes. 😊 6y

This is a wonderful story. I first saw the movie and then knew that I had to read the book. There is so much to say about this one and so many themes: the evil of violence against others, hope, joy, sacrifice, and the list goes on. This one is written for children but also wonderful for adults.

A 12-year-old boy escapes from a concentration camp and makes his way north to Denmark.
This one is tough on the feels, folks; although at times I was irritated at the boy, my heart was breaking for him throughout the story. It felt like a John Boyne novel, but not quite so well written, and the ending was way too abrupt.
