Sabbath's Theater | Philip Roth

He is relentlessly defiant. He is exceedingly libidinous. His appetite for the outrageous is insatiable. He is Mickey Sabbath, the aging, raging powerhouse whose savage effrontery and mocking audacity are at the heart of Philip Roth's astonishing new novel. Sabbath's Theater tells Mickey's story in the wake of the death of his mistress, an erotic free spirit whose adulterous daring exceeds even his own. Once a scandalously inventive puppeteer, Mickey is now in his mid-sixties and besieged by ghosts - of his mother, his beloved brother, his vanished first wife, his mistress of thirteen years. Bereft and grieving, he embarks on a turbulent journey back into his past, one that brings him to the brink of madness and extinction. But no matter how ardently he courts death, he is too exuberantly alive to succeed at dying. Sabbath's Theater is a comic creation of epic proportions, and Mickey Sabbath is its gargantuan hero. This book, which presents Philip Roth at the peak of his powers, is sur

Loved it! It is unsettling and wonderful!.

In Roth's new theater it feels as if the lights were about to be extinguished for good, and that's unsettling.(William H. Pritchard-1995)

"THE boardwalk was gone. Goodbye, boardwalk. The ocean had finally carried it away. The Atlantic is a powerful ocean. Death is a terrible thing. ... It was all remarkable. Goodbye, remarkable. Egypt and Greece goodbye, and goodbye, Rome!"

#JustaCreep #NoFemmeber I know just because a character is unlikable, we're not supposed to condemn them. But Mickey Sabbath is such a creep that it's tough to spend a whole novel with him. Dum Dum Girls frontwoman Dee Dee introduced me to only occasional-creeper French Romantic poets, with songs like "Evil Blooms", "Rimbaud Eyes", and "Season in Hell". Though my favorite DDG songs are tributes Dee Dee wrote about her mom after her death.

Cinfhen Ugh, I feel bad because he‘s no longer alive but I really do NOT enjoy Roth‘s writing at all!!!! 😕 6y
Billypar @Cinfhen I usually like him- this novel was the one exception. But when Roth was asked to name his favorite of all his works, he chose this one- go figure! 🤷 6y

THANK GOD IT'S OVER!!!!! Has anyone else read this abomination?! I would have tossed this one the first day had it not been for book club. I've never been more disgusted with a book in my entire life, and I've read and enjoyed a lot of crazy stuff. 🤢🤢🤢👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻🖕🏻🖕🏻🖕🏻🖕🏻

EricQiao How could an author so renowned wrote something so atrocious. 8y
Demanda @EricQiao no idea! 8y
Demanda @britt_brooke A wise decision! 8y
Yossarian What other Roth have you read and what did you think of those? 8y
Demanda @Yossarian I've read Goodbye Columbus, The Plot Against America, and American Pastoral. They weren't my favorite books, but I thought they had exponentially more merit that this piece of garbage. 8y
Yossarian Hmmm. The Plot Against America is one of my all-time favorites, so I'll have to figure out how to grade on the curve. 8y
Demanda @Yossarian I can respect that. I got a lot out of the convo surrounding that one even if I didn't love reading it 8y
