We Die Alone
We Die Alone: A WWII Epic of Escape and Endurance | David Howarth
7 posts | 8 read | 12 to read
We Die Alone recounts one of the most exciting escape stories to emerge from the challenges and miseries of World War II. In March 1943, a team of expatriate Norwegian commandos sailed from northern England for Nazi-occupied arctic Norway to organize and supply the Norwegian resistance. But they were betrayed and the Nazis ambushed them. Only one man survived--Jan Baalsrud. This is the incredible and gripping story of his escape. Frostbitten and snowblind, pursued by the Nazis, he dragged himself on until he reached a small arctic village. He was near death, delirious, and a virtual cripple. But the villagers, at mortal risk to themselves, were determined to save him, and--through impossible feats--they did. We Die Alone is an astonishing true story of heroism and endurance. Like Slavomir Rawicz's The Long Walk, it is also an unforgettable portrait of the determination of the human spirit.

Jan‘s survival is a miracle in and of itself, but the real heroes are the villagers who risked their lives and the lives of their family members in innumerable ways to help him escape. A very fast read but haunting. Howarth‘s is an old-fashioned but interesting voice leading the reader through this amazing tale.

#thankfulthursday Thank you @Eggs for the tag!

1. My Finnish sister-in-law in Bergen, Norway. We traditionally spend a day going to craft shops or the day crafting when I‘m there but the last time I only got to spend her lunchtime during work with her. When will I get to see her again? 😢

2. My family, my clients, and Litsy.

Crazeedi I pray you get to see your overseas family very soon💞 4y

Only a few pages in, but I can already tell this book is going to be riveting! #booknerd #read #weekend #memorialday

MonicaNap I was right. Finished it today. There are a ton of spelling errors though, but I'm assuming it's a poor translation, and it doesn't take away from the incredible story of survival. 8y

This is an amazing story about what a human can endure and what good people will do to help a fellow human. #thoughtprovoking in the same vein as Unbroken, another true survival story from WWII. #aprilbookshowers

#reallifeperson story of Jan Baalstrud who survived in the Arctic mountains of Norway 🇳🇴 while being chased by Nazis. Extremely brave ordinary Norwegians took extraordinary risks in occupied Norway to try to get him to safety. An excellent survival story on par with Unbroken. #octphotochallenge

ApoptyGina69 Yay Norway! I know very little about the history there. I'll set a goal to brush up soon. I used to listen to an electronic act from there (late '90s) called Apoptygma Berzerk. That's where my handle comes from-a misprint on an American CD of theirs. 8y
Texreader @ApoptyGina69 I had wondered about your handle! A great story!! I'm a bit older than you and I loved AHa from the 80s! Little did I know that when I was listening to that angelic voice of AHa that I'd marry a Norwegian and go visit the relatives so many times? Yay! A wonderful easy read about its entire history is this book: 8y

Amazing courage in a rugged land. Having visited Norway many times it was so nice to read about a heroic man during Norway's occupation in ww2 and to picture to some degree the hero's unbelievable endurance. Beautiful but rugged land for people of similar qualities who did the impossible to save him
