I do not like the misogyny in “The Thing on the Doorstep“, but I was happy to learn that Lovecraft abandoned his racist thought when he got older (if the afterword is to be believed). This book includes “The Colour Out of Space“, which is one of the best stories Lovecraft has ever written (imo). It's so tense and frightening. I loved rereading it and it was just as impressive as the first time.
Picture includes our own Thing on the Doorstep.

Bookwomble HPL moved to a New York District in his later life, and his exposure to the multicultural inhabitants softened his racist attitudes as he became aware of his prejudices and assumptions, and which he was open about in his correspondence. So, an instructive example of how othering can be overcome by experiencing people as people rather than objects 😊 13mo

There are legitimate concerns about HPL's personal views which are well documented elsewhere. Speaking only for the short story, it was a typically good HPL mystery/horror with especially good psychological elements. Not really much of a “reveal“ by the end, as the reader can easily figure out what's going on, but solid nonetheless.

Surprise afternoon off, so I went to pick up comics. Discovered the fall sale was still happening and scored the last volume of Locke & Key (finally!) & this beauty of a Lovecraft. Saw two more in this series, which somehow I did not know about! The design is fantastic! I love Guillermo del Toro very much, so I'm excited to see what he has to say in his intro

Just like The Call of Cthulhu, The Thing on the Doorstep and other weird stories is a collection of amazing classic horror stories. H.P. Lovecraft was an innovative supernatural storyteller. I highly recommend this to readers who enjoy horror books.

MrBook Looove Lovecraft! 😁👍🏻 8y

I read this all in one night. It really sent chills down my spine. Obviously it would, being Lovecraft. This short story was with the read.
