A modern-day Orlando -- edgy, funny and startlingly honest -- Self is the fictional autobiography of a young writer and traveller who finds his gender changed overnight.

Pickpick

The narrator of Martel‘s debut is born a man, yet becomes a woman overnight. This is an interesting premise yet it doesn‘t add much to the story, which is a report of sex and travels, without any real depth to the plot or the characters.
The last part of the book is very disturbing (I‘ll add a TW in the comments) and feels very real. The result of what happens makes sense and makes the book worth reading. A light pick.

BarbaraBB TW: rape 1d
Megabooks Unpopular opinion: I did not care for the Life of Pi and have never really desired to read more of his books. I agree that this premise does sound interesting, so I'm sorry to hear the execution is subpar. 23h
BarbaraBB @Megabooks I didn‘t know that, about you and Pi 😃! I loved the book, not the movie. However, don‘t bother reading this one! 14h

#WeeklyForecast 45/24

Somehow I haven‘t read as much lately so I think these two books might me ambitious already. I have started The Echoes already and am enjoying it.
The tagged one (by the author of Life of Pi) has been sitting on my shelves for ages so I am glad to pick it up for #FoodAndLit 🇨🇦

sarahbarnes I loved Pi so will be curious to hear about this one. And I am excited to read something by Wyld soon - I never have! 5d
TheKidUpstairs I've got The Echoes pre-ordered (it's not out here until February!), eager to hear your thoughts when you've finished!

@sarahbarnes The Bass Rock is my favourite of hers!

sarahbarnes @TheKidUpstairs that is really good to know! 5d

This is one of my all time favorite novels ever. I've read it three times. It was a tough book to get into, but once I did I was enthralled. A book has never infuriated me, or made me as sad and happy as this. I literally cried like a baby with its tragic ending.
If you can crack into this book, you will not regret it.

My TBR for when I get a chance to read a print book again. I'm 147 pages into Living to tell the tale, but finding it slow going. Read a bit of Self and liked it, but forgot about it. I may be tempted to read The Girl on the Train first...

BarbaraJean Love seeing your girl in this picture! 😊 8y
