Extinction | Thomas Bernhard
2 posts | 2 read | 8 to read
Thomas Bernhard (1931-1989) has been hailed by Gabriel Josipovici as 'Austria's finest postwar writer' and by George Steiner as 'one of the masters of contemporary European fiction.' Faber Finds is proud to reissue a selection of four of Bernhard's finest novels.Extinction, Bernhard's last published novel, is the story of Franz-Josef Murau-intellectual black sheep of a powerful Austrian land-owning family-who lives in Rome in self-imposed exile, surrounded by a coterie of artistic and intellectual friends. On returning from his sister's wedding on the family estate of Wolfsegg, having resolved never to go home again, Murau receives a telegram informing him of the death of his parents and brother in a car crash. Not only must he now go back, he must do so as the master of Wolfsegg; and he must decide its fate.

Extinction | Thomas Bernhard

Any book by Bernhard is not an easy read. But I thoroughly enjoyed this game of the intellect.

Auslschung | Thomas Bernhard

AceOnRoam I'm not sure what you are saying but I like it :) 7y
Anna40 @Izai.Amorim I thought this was funny! What do you think? 7y

Anna40 @AceOnRoam it's about how he perceives Italians as children who grew up in a "free way" free spirit coming from a happy well of family and contrasting them with the Germans who come from a poor oppressed beaten home. Mine is not a great translation that's the idea... poor Germans! 7y
Anna40 Well-off 7y
AceOnRoam Thanks for the translation 😊 7y
Izai.Amorim Well, Germans do admire the Italian (and French) way of life, and Italians admire German efficiency and classical culture (Goethe, Rilke, etc). Germans enjoy the disorganization and confusion - as long as they don‘t miss their flight. 😂 It‘s a very difficult relationship. As Italians say, “Germans love but don‘t respect us. We respect but don‘t love them.” 😎 7y
Anna40 @Izai.Amorim Two very different nations 😊 hope the elections won't bring Berlusconi 🤤🤤🤤back 7y
Izai.Amorim It looks like it could happen. At least our Italian friends won‘t feel that ashamed this time, after orange man even bugalunga man seems acceptable. Isn‘t that crazy? 7y
Anna40 You know what's really scary? I think you're right! Not only orange man but also the fact that there is no one you can actually vote for are a humungous problem! I dissuaded my husband from voting for Lega Nord! And he is not a supporter at all he simply did not know who to vote for! I was totally in shock! So facelift, hairtransplant mafia mysoginistic bugalunga man will probably win!!! 😭😭😭😭 7y
Anna40 @Izai.Amorim the above post was for you. Forgot to tag you 7y
Izai.Amorim @Anna40 I feel very sorry for Italy. No good choices. The right won‘t solve any problem, the left is a joke, our friends call Renzi a “left-wing Andreotti” 😮 and the five star people are anti Europe, when Europe is the only good thing Italy still have. 7y
Anna40 Yep! That's pretty much what my husband said. 😔 7y
Anna40 @Izai.Amorim I forgot to tag you above... he IS back 😭😭😭 7y
Izai.Amorim @Anna40 Yes, he‘s back. Who could have thought that a billionaire, whose fortune is of dubious, many say criminal origin, with the sole goal of using the office to enrich himself and stop legal action against him, a lier, womanizer, misanthrope, egomaniacal, low-IQ person with bad hair and fake tan could ever get elected? Unprecedented tragedy. Possible Only in Italy, vero, cara mia? Incredibile. 🤷‍♂️ 7y
Anna40 @Izai.Amorim couldn't be phrased better! Sad depressing times.. 7y
