The Steady Running of the Hour
The Steady Running of the Hour | Justin Go
13 posts | 10 read | 16 to read
In this mesmerizing debut, a young American discovers he may be heir to the unclaimed estate of an English World War I officer, which launches him on a quest across Europe to uncover the elusive truth. Just after graduating college, Tristan Campbell receives a letter delivered by special courier to his apartment in San Francisco. It contains the phone number of a Mr. J.F. Prichard of Twyning & Hooper, Solicitors, in London and news that could change Tristans life forever. In 1924, Prichard explains, an English alpinist named Ashley Walsingham died attempting to summit Mt. Everest, leaving his fortune to his former lover, Imogen Soames-Andersson. But the estate was never claimed. Information has recently surfaced suggesting Tristan may be the rightful heir, but unless he can find documented evidence, the fortune will be divided among charitable beneficiaries in less than two months. In a breathless race from London archives to Somme battlefields to the Eastfjords of Iceland, Tristan pieces together the story of a forbidden affair set against the tumult of the First World War and the pioneer British expeditions to Mt. Everest. Following his instincts through a maze of frenzied research, Tristan soon becomes obsessed with the tragic lovers, and he crosses paths with a mysterious French girl named Mireille who suggests there is more to his quest than he realizes. Tristan must prove that he is related to Imogen to inherit Ashleys fortune but the more he learns about the couple, the stranger his journey becomes. The Steady Running of the Hour announces the arrival of a stunningly talented author. Part love story, part historical tour de force, Justin Gos novel is utterly compelling, unpredictable, and heartrending.

What really pleased me was that plot line in the past and the conflict that arose between the back-then protagonists.

Maybe only because I don‘t read World-War-I-fiction often but I could perfectly understand both parties. Each had arguments that were both relatable and irrational at the same time which made it engagingly difficult to take a side.

You see, the book really ain‘t bad. Overall I just missed the icing on the cake. 🤷🏽‍♀️

Seems my mind is not yet through with this. 🤷🏽‍♀️

Yes, I wouldn‘t even have considered “reading” it had I known before that WWI plays a role in there. And _yes_ I then definitely would‘ve missed an impressive description‼️

But: This present female character and her behaviour towards Tristan, the protagonist … I just wanted to give her a clip round the ear. 😠 This plot line tries to copy the one in the past so badly that it‘s annoying.

Mehso-so

In whole not absorbing enough for a “Pick”. The end disappointed me and leaves me with the feeling to have missed something.
The plot set in the present often is too constructed; additionally it sometimes explained too few.

At first, the other two plots (during WWI and an 1924 expedition to Mount Everest) felt like interruptions of the main plot. But the further the main story went the more I liked them. They became really fascinating.

I am not contended with me today. I didn‘t manage to do my exercises although I felt my body told me it would appreciate me doing so.

Instead, I decided to lair me in bed with the help of some pillows while continuing my audiobook. Let‘s hope this also does the trick.

When you don‘t know if you want to continue your audiobook which until now seems rather intertwined and you therefore know you better pay close attention – or if you instead of listening prefer to continue your current paper read which has quite a lot of characters you until now still confuse easily …

And you then on the spur of the moment decide to start preparing lunch for the day after tomorrow. 😇😂

Less than 30 minutes old and already enthralling. 😃

Next audio.

“Young Tristan Campbell must find out who the mysterious, beautiful Imogen was. And why wealthy Ashley fell in love with her – almost a century ago. And above all, why they couldn‘t find each other. A race against time begins, in which the heartbeat is getting stronger and stronger: From the heights of the Himalayas to London, Paris, Berlin to Sweden and Iceland. Everywhere, he discovers traces of a great love.”

I‘m really curious.

This totally scratched my wanderlust / historical fiction / alternating narrators / subtle love interest itch. I'll probably read it again in a couple of years.

If you liked Postcards From No Man's Land, I bet you'll enjoy this too.

This is the first book I've won with the Goodreads Giveaways..
I was going to share a pic of my copy of "The Shadow of the Wind" but I couldn't find it ? I think I have landed it to a friend, but it never came back.. So those two shadows on the cover are the first thing that I thought of!

CocoReads That's the worst--never getting them back. 8y
La_Cori @CocoReads I know.. and I really liked that book!! 😣 8y
CocoReads I actually think I'm on my second copy of it because I did that very thing. 8y

What if a phone call out of the blue sends you on a chase of illusive clues of your past? What if you had a tough choice to make? I felt for the characters in the scenario (both the older and newer generation), but the ending was NOT REALLY an ending. It left so many unanswered questions, and the scenes I wanted just weren't there. Mixed emotions, but overall well written.

My inability to finish this book probably has more to do with where I am in my life than with the book itself. For some reason, I couldn't engage the story or the protagonist, despite the fact that I honestly tried to. That said, the premise is so promising that I'll probably circle back around to it at some point.

this is one of those books that manages to be thoroughly satisfying while also having an ending that is frustratingly open-ended, and i loved it.
