Broken Angels
Broken Angels | Richard K. Morgan
Welcome back to the brash, brutal new world of the twenty-fifth century: where global politics isnt just for planet Earth anymore; and where death is just a break in the action, thanks to the techno-miracle that can preserve human consciousness and download it into one new body after another. Cynical, quick-on-the-trigger Takeshi Kovacs, the ex-U.N. envoy turned private eye, has changed careers, and bodies, once more . . . trading sleuthing for soldiering as a warrior-for-hire, and helping a far-flung planets government put down a bloody revolution. But when it comes to taking sides, the only one Kovacs is ever really on is his own. So when a rogue pilot and a sleazy corporate fat cat offer him a lucrative role in a treacherous treasure hunt, hes only too happy to go AWOL with a band of resurrected soldiers of fortune. All that stands between them and the ancient alien spacecraft they mean to salvage are a massacred city bathed in deadly radiation, unleashed nanotechnolgy with a million ways to kill, and whatever surprises the highly advanced Martian race may have in store. But armed with his genetically engineered instincts, and his trusty twin Kalashnikovs, Takeshi is ready to take on anythingand let the devil take whoevers left behind. This is a much different book than Altered Carbon in terms of genre (this is more a straightforward military sci fi) but I still had a good time! The introduction of Martian archaeology was so interesting and I loved the extended world building, and I liked the dynamics between Kovac‘s crew. Some parts dragged but it was intriguing enough throughout, though the writing itself was sometimes a bit too vague and jumbled. 4/5⭐️, a solid book 2!

Book 2 in the Takeshi Kovacs series that started in Altered Carbon. This story is more a military sci-fi that the crime sci-fi of the previous book. It was an interesting story, but not quite as good as the first. And from what I can tell in the 1st three episodes of season 2 of Altered Carbon on Netflix, about the only thing they take from this book is characters and names.

Though the story wasn't as good as the first book, the world building is great and I enjoyed learning a bit more about the Martians. Book three is on my list!
