A haunting tale of apparitions, a cursed manor house, and two generations of women determined to discover the truth, by the author of The Ghost Writer Sell the Hall unseen; burn it to the ground and plow the earth with salt, if you will; but never live there . . . Constance Langton grows up in a household marked by death, her father distant, her mother in perpetual mourning for Constances sister, the child she lost.Desperate to coax her mother back to health, Constance takes her to a sance: perhaps she will find comfort from beyond the grave. But the meeting has tragic consequences. Constance is left alone, her only legacy a mysterious bequest that will blight her life. So begins The Sance, John Harwoods brilliant second novel, a gripping, dark mystery set in late-Victorian England. It is a world of apparitions, of disappearances and unnatural phenomena, of betrayal and blackmail and black-hearted villainsand murder. For Constances bequest comes in two parts: a house and a mystery. Years before, a family disappeared atWraxford Hall, a decaying mansion in the English countryside with a sinister reputation. Now the Hall belongs to Constance. And she must descend into the darkness at the heart of theWraxford Mystery to find the truth, even at the cost of her life.

In this engrossing story of profound grief and supernatural visitations, Constance turns to a spiritualist to assuage her mother's overwhelming despair after her younger sister dies. When she subsequently learns of a mysterious bequest, Constance feels compelled to uncover the truth about a mystery at its heart. The author deftly portrays the novel's Victorian setting as well as the desperation and despair of a woman trapped by her circumstances.

I am posting one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it, I just do. Some will be old, some will be new. Don‘t judge me - I have a lot of books. Join the fun if you want.
This is day 111 #bookstoread #tbrpile #bookstagram

Ruthiella I have this book unread too! Maybe this Halloween 🎃? 4y

Mehso-so

While the book is titled The Seance there is in fact very little when it comes to the paranormal. There are a few ghosts here and there but it is mainly a mystery set in the Victorian era. The characters and the story were well written. It was a beautiful Victorian Gothic setting that you could fall into. However, the story line just never ramped up like I thought it would. It was an ok read.

I'm just under 1/3 done reading the Seance. I'm hoping to get to finish it sometime later this week - but that really just depends on time. I don't dislike the book but I don't like it yet either. Hoping it picks up as I get further along in the read as it just seems to be an ok read as of right now.

Overall more of a So-so. But for when you're looking for something like this, it turned out pretty good. The story is told through journal entries, letters, & includes a genealogy chart - this rings lots of my bells 😊 If you want to sit with a story set in the ruins of an estate at the turn of the 20th century, you'll be happy with this pick📚

I've been so busy this month that my spooky reading has been scarce 😢. I'm trying to sneak in 2 more. This one was slow going at first. But the haunted house bequeathed by an unknown relative just came on the scene 😱. So this one might get done tonight.

Book 3 of Booktubeathon (challenge: read a book only after sunset). Another ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ for me (I've been having a good reading month!) Gothic mystery, Victorian era, spiritualism and seances, murder, family drama and a creepy old house - what's not to love?
