Pickpick

As far as Graham Greene novels go, I‘d say this one ranks somewhere in the middle of his oeuvre. While no Greene novel is complete without some Catholic or faith theme, this one‘s protagonist is seemingly lacking that faith, yet the question of whether it‘s important or whether he ought to at least believe in something is a constant undercurrent. As usual, another novel of colonizers and their intrigues amongst the colonized; an okay read.

TheKidUpstairs Agreed. I liked this one, but not as much as Our Man in Havana or Brighton Rock 5d

jillrhudy What amazes me is, why do the librarians let it be sold instead of putting it in the collection? That hardcover “Murder on the Orient Express” is a great acquisition for a book that gets heavy use. 7y
britt_brooke @jillrhudy These are all books that were donated to the library for the sale. I don‘t think they add any of them to the collection. It‘s a good question, though. 7y
jillrhudy @britt_brooke then they are either dopey or made of money. I have acquisitioned 50 book donations for my fiction area since September when I started keeping track. Someone gave us an entire 1960 set of all the works of Zane Grey in perfect condition. Another person dropped off a complete library of John Grisham in hardback. Once we got 20 Stephen King hardcovers. 7y
britt_brooke @jillrhudy I‘ll have to ask next time I stop by. You‘ve got me curious. 7y
RidgewayGirl Fantastic haul! 7y
Reviewsbylola Dammmmmmmmmmn girl! I loved the Didion and Running With Scissors!! 7y

What could have been really heavy and difficult to read is actually made palatable with Greene‘s beautiful writing and a cast of memorable characters—who are all playing “roles” or comedians with each other. It had a lighter feeling even though the history of Haiti shown here is horrible.
