Book Two in the critically acclaimed The Fire Sermon trilogy "The Hunger Games" meets Cormac McCarthy s "The Road" in this richly imagined post-apocalyptic series by award-winning poet Francesca Haig. Four hundred years in the future, the Earth has turned primitive following a nuclear fire that has laid waste to civilization and nature. Though the radiation fallout has ended, for some unknowable reason every person is born with a twin. Of each pair, one is an Alpha physically perfect in every way; and the other an Omega burdened with deformity, small or large. With the Council ruling an apartheid-like society, Omegas are branded and ostracized while the Alphas have gathered the world s sparse resources for themselves. Though proclaiming their superiority, for all their effort, Alphas cannot escape one harsh fact: whenever one twin dies, so does the other. Cass is a rare Omega, one burdened with psychic foresight. While her twin, Zach, gains power on the Alpha Council, she dares to dream the most dangerous dream of all: equality. For daring to envision a world in which Alphas and Omegas live side-by-side as equals, both the Council and the Resistance have her in their sights."

I started this one right after I received it, but I was in the middle of a book slump & couldn't get in to it. I'm glad I finally came back to it, because it was definitely worth it! I really enjoyed this one. I think I probably enjoyed The Fire Sermon a bit more, but this was a great sequel. I'll anxiously await the third in trilogy coming out in December!

I did enjoy this, but it wasn't as good as the first.

The story didn't progress very quickly, and was mostly a set up for the next book. There was a lot of build up throughout, which ended up finishing in an anticlimactic couple of chapters, and was quickly glossed over to set up the cliffhanger.

Despite that, there were parts that added a new dimension to the story, and I will definitely read the next in the series.

Debiw781 I have this one on my shelves. Sorry it didn't live up to the first one 8y

This book went back and forth between sad and depressing. While there were a couple parts I loved most of it was just sad.... and depressing. It ended well enough but even after finishing the book I was kind of in a blah mood. I am hoping really good things from the last book in the series.

Started book two tonight. I want to glue my eyes open so I can continue reading! I'll probably get a chance to read more at Roman's 3am feeding. 😴😕📚📖

Smangela lol I started nodding off right now and I figured, I'll finish Litsy browsing and read a little more when my Little One wakes up :) I'll probably be up around the same time also reading 👍🏻❤ 8y

Mommamanzi @Smangela, Roman was quick, he fell back asleep nursing. Now let's see if I can transfer him back to his crib without waking him up #momninjastyle. Guess no reading for me. Bittersweet. 8y
Smangela I'm keeping my fingers crossed that happens here too haha! 8y
Smangela Good luck with the transfer ;) hahaha 8y

This book has been entered in the 2016 Aurealis Awards, for which I am a judge. Any review will be withheld until the results are announced.

After thoroughly enjoying book 1 (The Fire Sermon), I was looking forward to reading the sequel. Unfortunately it didn't live up to my expectations. I found myself reading it just to get it finished and once I'd reached the end I felt a little unsatisfied. That said, it was easy to read and continued to explore the same issues as book 1, although perhaps not as deeply.

I'm starting to fall out with my library big time. They never have the books I want at the minute. How am I meant to finish Fire Sermon if I can't get hold of Map of Bones like now?! I need to know what happens 😓

Friends are describing this as bleak and it does get grim. However, there were light moments: loyalty, friendship and even tolerance. Okay, not too much. We also get a glimpse at the cause of this dystopian world.

Mommamanzi I'm a little over a third of the way into reading it, it's really sad. I want SOMETHING good to happen. This first book had a good balance but this one I feel is a tad off (so far). 8y

Just got an email from B&N that I'm getting a credit in the Apple ebook settlement; I got a tidy sum when the publishers paid out in 2014, so now I'm mentally planning out what books I want to get with my moola. This one is at the top of my list, but there are SO MANY things I want! Aaaaack!!!!!!

Nuwanda I'm in a similar boat. It's pretty awesome! 8y
