Falling Together
Falling Together | Marisa de los Santos
8 posts | 20 read | 11 to read
Her writing is both vividly descriptive and surprisingly insightful. Boston Globe Its the three-dimensional men, women, and children who populate her fiction that Ill remember for a very long time. Nancy Pearls Picks Following the phenomenal success of her novels Love Walked In and Belong to Me, New York Times bestselling author Marisa de los Santos returns with Falling Together, an emotionally resonant, powerfully moving, and pitch perfect novel about friends, family, and love. Truly modern womens fiction at its finest, this is the unforgettable tale of a remarkable friendship that ended abruptly, only to be resurrected in great need years later at a college reunion, launching three formerly devoted companions and reluctant family members alike on a sobering, enlightening journey across the world and through the past. Brimming with the authors trademark wit, vivid prose, and captivating characterizations, Falling Together brilliantly explores our deepest human connections and confirms Marisa de los Santos as one of Americas most exciting contemporary novelists.

The only word I can use to describe this book is “tedious.” The storyline is all over the place and by the end I was wondering what the point of it all was. This is my first book by this author. I suspect it may also be my last. 😖

CarolynM Oh dear! I've really enjoyed her books in the past. I have this one but haven't got to it yet. 3y

I think that I shall never see
A sight as lovely as that first cup
Of tea.
In the morning.
Poems are hard.
🤷🏻‍♀️

Leftcoastzen Love it !😄👏 3y
Amiable @Leftcoastzen This is why I read the books and don‘t write them. 😀 3y

I liked, but didn‘t love this. Given how much I usually love books by this author, that‘s not much of a criticism. This was a bit predictable, but I enjoyed how it explored friendships and the ways they change & shift from college into adulthood. I also love how De Los Santos manages to take lovable characters, throw them in with thoroughly unlikeable characters, and make you understand & feel for them all so deeply by the end of the book!

1. Variation on my name—a college friend used to call me this (but my middle name isn‘t Jean)
2. Technical Writer at a credit union
3. I have no extra quarantine time—I‘m working 40 hours/week, just from home instead of the office.
4. The tagged book, also Magic for Liars by Sarah Gailey (audio), Immortal Diamond by Richard Rohr
5. Comfort reads! Breathing. Silly Netflix shows. Walks in my neighborhood. Guided prayer apps & podcasts.

MemoirsForMe Any good podcasts you can recommend? I listen to Book Riot, What Should I Read Next, Reading Glasses, Trek Geeks. 5y
BarbaraJean @UwannaPublishme Here I was specifically talking about guided prayer podcasts—not sure if that‘s what you‘re looking for, but my favorites for those are a podcast called Slo and an app called Pray as you go. For bookish podcasts, though: I love Harry Potter and the Sacred Text, BBC Radio 4‘s Bookclub, and Levar Burton Reads. Library Talks from the NYPL is also good, as well as the Greenlight Bookstore podcast. 😊 5y
MemoirsForMe They all sound great! I haven‘t heard about prayer podcasts. I‘m always looking for new ones. Thanks! 🤗🤗🤗 5y

I should be folding the clothes. 😬 🙊 #oops

BiblioLitten There have been times when I started folding clothes, left that to read a book and dozed off on the pile itself. (Such is life) 🙄 7y

Pickpick

A killing-time-at-the-airport pick that turned out really well. Sympathetic characters at a crossroads with each other. An exploration of friendship, love, connection, the ways these things change over time and the ways that they form a constant in life. The final section is set in the Philippines (how they get there is a little contrived, but a minor complaint). The descriptions of the country and the food make me long to go there myself.
