Twelve Days of Terror
Twelve Days of Terror: Inside the Shocking 1916 New Jersey Shark Attacks | Richard G. Fernicola
3 posts | 1 read | 11 to read
Upon the 100th anniversary of the most terrifying stretch of shark attacks in American history--a wave said to have been the inspiration for Jaws--comes a reissue of the classic Lyons Press account and investigation. In July 1916, a time when World War I loomed over America and New York City was in the midst of a deadly polio epidemic, the tri-state area sought relief at the Jersey shore. The Atlantic s refreshing waters proved to be utterly inhospitable, however. In just twelve days, four swimmers were violently and fatally mauled in separate shark attacks, and a fifth swimmer escaped an attack within inches of his life. In this thoroughly researched account, Dr. Richard Fernicola, the leading expert on the attacks, presents a riveting portrait, investigation, and scientific analysis of the terrifying days against the colorful backdrop of America in 1916 in Twelve Days of Terror."

#TBRtemptation post 1! In July 1916, a wave of shark attacks along the Jersey Shore was terrorizing enough to replace WWI in the headlines and inspire one of publishing's and film's most iconic books and horror films. In 12 days, 4 swimmers were killed and others came close. The author provides narrative recounting and cutting-edge science to makes sense of it all. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

There aren't any #landmarks as such to my town's most famous event: in July of 1916, a shark swam up Matawan Creek and attacked Lester Stillwell. The friends he was swimming with ran to Main Street shouting about it and a bunch of men ran to the creek to see what was happening. Stanley Fisher gave his life trying to save Lester. Both are buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, the most haunted cemetery in NJ. @Clwojick
