I wondered about this when we read this book for #NForNonfiction and she mentioned that some of the wild chimpanzees got and still had issues from contracting polio crossed over from humans. I‘m guessing it‘s only a matter of time until this effects the few wild primates left. 😢

This arrived yesterday, and I‘m already loving it. The first chapter about her childhood is lovely.
pickI loved the first 2/3 of this, the experiences of her young life, the initial wonder of arriving in Africa, and eventually of meeting the Chimpanzees. Such beauty and communion with nature, it was magical to read. The last 1/3 was much harder, it‘s about climate change and species destruction and her reasons for hope, as the title says. However her reasons for hope seem like opportunities missed reading this now in 2021, 21 yrs after publication.
I had to google these after they were mentioned in the book…. Tiny antelope the size of a hare, her description said….google did not disappoint. So cute!!! Look at those eyelashes.
Sorry I‘m taking so long with this book, I‘m stopping to google way too much! @tjwill I promise I‘ll get it finished and off to you this week.

pickI grew up watching Goodall on NatGeo specials, so this brought back memories. I loved her stories about the chimps of Gombe forest. But this is more than that. She connects nature, spirituality, man‘s humanity ... and our inhumanity ... as well. Written in the late 90s, it‘s a bit dated though.

After a few hours reading on my back deck while watering my garden and ?ing these iris, I looked up the author of my current read on IG. Learned that she JUST won this lovely prize given to a living person, “whose exemplary achievements advance Sir John Templeton's philanthropic vision: harnessing the power of the sciences to explore the deepest questions of the universe and humankind‘s place and purpose within it." Just what the book‘s about.
Mr. B was intrigued by my current book choice. So he starts Googling and tells me that the tip of Jane Goodall‘s thumb was bitten off by a chimpanzee in 2008. So now we know! I‘m only up to 1974 in the book and had no idea! 🤪🤣🤪🤣

There are so many lovely passages in this book, I may have to order a hard copy. Highlighting in an ebook is just not the same. In this sentence, she describes standing in the cathedral of Notre Dame when the organ begins to play. “That moment, a suddenly captured moment of eternity, was perhaps the closest I have ever come to experiencing ecstasy, the ecstasy of the mystic.”
so-soIt was a little bit too wandering for me at times in theme and intent. However, not having every seen or read anything about Jane Goodall, it was interesting to hear about her life and how spirituality permeated her scientific and life work with animals.
My boyfriend surprised me with flowers after being so stressed and tired at work. The bright colors make it feel like spring even though it is still snowing outside!

Can Jane Goodall just narrate my entire life? Either way, loved hearing her life story and how she connects her religious beliefs with that of the scientific world. In the last third of the book she really focused on her activism for animal rights. It made me think about how now we have very popular companies like Lush who are wanted because they don‘t test on animals.

A few years ago I visited Nagasaki, the site of the second atomic bomb that ended World War II.
