Lost Honor of Katharina Blum: Or: How Violence Develops and Where It Can Lead
Lost Honor of Katharina Blum: Or: How Violence Develops and Where It Can Lead | Heinrich Boll
6 posts | 18 read | 17 to read
Nobel Prize winner Heinrich Boll's powerful novel about a woman terrorized by the media In an era in which journalists will stop at nothing to break a story, Henrich Boll's "The Lost Honor of Katharina Blum" has taken on heightened relevance. A young woman's association with a hunted man makes her the target of a journalist determined to grab headlines by portraying her as an evil woman. As the attacks on her escalate and she becomes the victim of anonymous threats, Katharina sees only one way out of her nightmare. Turning the mystery genre on its head, the novel begins with the confession of a crime, drawing the reader into a web of sensationalism, character assassination, and the unavoidable eruption of violence. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators."

A murder mystery like I‘ve never read. Page 1, you know who the killer is, but you don‘t know who she killed or why. I quite enjoyed this book and its social commentary which is still quite relevant a few decades later

This was a great read set in 1970's Germany it is a remarkably relevant look at how the tabloid press can destroy an individual. As it's a short book it is definitely one i will reread.

Nute Fiction or memoir? Either way I‘m intrigued, and I agree invasive tabloid press can probably shatter a person. Stacked! 6y
andrew61 @Nute fiction - interesting read definitely ahead of its time. 6y
Billypar Tabloids seem to prey on the ugliest parts of human nature- sounds like a tough but important story to read about! 6y
EadieB @andrew61 I enjoyed this novel very much as the author, Heinrich Boll, did a great job of showing how newspapers can ruin a person's life by publishing lies in order to use the power of their ink. It is an unique mystery story as we are shown the end result of murder and how the violence unfolds throughout the rest of the novel. Although written in 1974 this story is very relevant even today as newspapers are still very active in this practice. 6y

Böll brilliantly demonstrates how a young woman's character and reputation are ruthlessly attacked because of her relationship with a young dissident. It's a chilling and horribly relevant story #lost #NoFemmeBer @Cinfhen @Billypar

BarbaraBB Ooh I want to read this one! 6y
Cinfhen Nice choice @andrew61 just posted about this book too! Sounds really interesting 6y

Billypar Never heard of this, but sounds like an important story to tell! 6y
Moray_Reads @Billypar it's brilliant. Böll is one of my favourite writers and he creates such nuanced, complex characters. Especially his women 6y
andrew61 @Moray_Reads i haven't gone back to boll since i read this and from memory I'm sure i heard about it when the parliamentary press enquiry was at it's height although i can't just recall who i heard reference it, it was definitely on a podcast although who? . I'll try and get hold of group portrait, thanks for the recommendation. 6y
Moray_Reads @andrew61 it's one of my favourite books of all time. An absolute masterpiece. I must read it again 6y
scripturient This was compulsory school reading for me and I hated it so much. 🤣 6y
Moray_Reads @scripturient oh no! Why does school so often destroy books for students? 🤔 6y
scripturient @Moray_Reads I don‘t know. I actually liked a lot of the other books we were assigned but somehow didn‘t like this one. Maybe it‘s time for a reread to see if I feel differently now. :) 6y
Moray_Reads @scripturient I'm a huge Böll fan so I would go with that plan! 😂 6y

Rostock was deserted on a Sunday morning, compared to neighbouring Wärnemunde which was preparing for an ultraRight rally.

I just noticed this in a pile going to charity shops, its about how the press distort an incident causing chaos in a young womans life, set in 70's Germany but could be today.

AMVP Saw the film adaptation in a Cinematic German History class (that is, a class that traced modern German history through the nation's films). This and The Nasty Girl were both really good, which is to say they make you really angry. 8y
andrew61 @AMVP i haven't seen the film, i will look it up thanks 8y
Moray_Reads Böll is one of my favourite writers and this one is great 8y
