G is not a typical coming-of-age story. It has the general shape, but Berger colors outside the lines. G., called “the protagonist“, is Giovanni. It begins well, with the impressionistic memories of a child and some exquisite writing and imagery, but the private experience that supposedly builds-up a fully realized character layer by layer is just boring sexual intrigues. I was disappointed G. did not meet the same end as his operatic namesake.
