On Pern, men breed and train great fire-breathing dragons to help them fight the deadly silver Threads that fall from the sky, destroying all life-forms, whenever the Red Star passes near.

Revisiting Pern via audiobook. Aside from some of the marked blind spots of 1960s second wave feminism, the world building and writerly craftmanship still hold up. I read the #Harperhall trilogy first, then #Dragonflight, #Dragonquest, and #TheWhiteDragon when I was still in elementary school and they got me into sci fi as a lifelong reader. Coming back decades later is eye opening, sometimes alarming, and yet still vindicating.

The 2nd Pern book starts where the 1st left us, but there‘s dissent brewing over the Oldtimer dragon riders that Lessa brought forward to help fight Thread. F‘lars left trying to fix the damage they cause but everyone‘s angry, distrustful & upset. I love this series & world, as you can see, I‘ve reread them many times over. Highly recommend. #BookspinBingo #SeriesLove2023 #Pop23

TheAromaofBooks You're making me want to reread these, and I do NOT have time for that kind of commitment right now 😂 2y

He has the entire Weyr hopping to when he itches and wants to be oiled. That‘s a lot of dragon to oil.

... the Weyrs would go between time itself and catch Thread ...

Re-reading for the umpteenth time. The misogyny is troubling me more than usual; could be a sign of the time it was written (1971)? Still loving it.

I want a dragon!

There isn‘t a beach along the coastline that doesn‘t have a dragon couchant, with rider a-coil, feigning sleep.

Oh, you laugh?
Aye, and they‘ve made a note of both occasions that I did.

Second in the series, Dragonquest was more enjoyable than the first, the world building was done mostly in the first so the second allowed for us to learn more about the characters and the dragons and their relationships.

I really enjoyed F‘nor and his dragon Canth, their growth as characters was really well written.

Overall an enjoyable addition to the series 🐉

Finally a feminist emerges!

I'm 'bout sick of all the women relegated to domestic tasks instead of true leadership. It seems even on other planets women are broodmares and housekeepers.

What's Pernese for "Go make me a sammich?"

I just finished listening to this audiobook, although I had read the novel several times over the course of my life. I was struck at how structureless it is, with conflicts arising and being resolved without the sort of building action, climax, falling action pattern you get out of most fiction. It‘s more a series of vignettes, but it builds the world in a satisfying way.

This was my first introduction to both sci-fi and fantasy as a kid, and I loved every page. I'm honored to be the first to mention this particular book here on Litsy. May Ms. McCaffrey's legacy live on forever. ❤️
