Common People
Common People: An Anthology of Working-Class Writers | Kit de Waal
11 posts | 5 read | 8 to read
Working-class stories are not always tales of the underprivileged and dispossessed. Common People is a collection of essays, poems and memoir written in celebration, not apology: these are narratives rich in barbed humour, reflecting the depth and texture of working-class life, the joy and sorrow, the solidarity and the differences, the everyday wisdom and poetry of the woman at the bus stop, the waiter, the hairdresser. Here, Kit de Waal brings together thirty-three established and emerging writers who invite you to experience the world through their eyes, their voices loud and clear as they reclaim and redefine what it means to be working class. Features original pieces from Damian Barr, Malorie Blackman, Lisa Blower, Jill Dawson, Louise Doughty, Stuart Maconie, Chris McCrudden, Lisa McInerney, Paul McVeigh, Daljit Nagra, Dave OBrien, Cathy Rentzenbrink, Anita Sethi, Tony Walsh, Alex Wheatle and more.

Cinfhen I like Kit de waal but I‘m not sure I‘d understand/ appreciate this collection of stories because I‘m from the US! What do u think?? (edited) 5y
arlenefinnigan @Cinfhen I think you'd like it. Obviously a lot of the cultural references are very British but it's more about people's experiences, how they feel about being working class, the positive and negative experiences. 5y
arlenefinnigan @TrishB post it! It needs the publicity! 5y
TrishB @arlenefinnigan I have another one ready now! 5y

Loving this collection of short stories so far!

I could relate to ‘Misspent Youth‘ as I used to be able to beat all the boys at pool, in ‘Don‘t Mention Class!‘ I get deducted 10 points for being a Northerner and then....

This was my actual school!

The author was there quite a few years before me though.... but still fascinating when you see it in print.

TrishB That‘s so cool 👍🏻 it‘s a fascinating collection! You will definitely recognise things if your school is in there. 5y

CarolynM Less than $3 on kindle here so I've just bought a copy.🙂 5y
TrishB @CarolynM it‘s very U.K. based, but still some insightful stuff. As with all collections some are great and some aren‘t! 5y

CarolynM 👍 I'm a dedicated Anglophile - I'm pretty good with UK social/political references 5y

This is brilliant, best book of the year so far. A much-needed collection of working class voices telling their own story. Some pieces are gritty, some are poetic, many are very relatable, some tell grim stories that you're grateful aren't yours. An absolute must read.

TrishB Love it when I go and check prices and it‘s on offer #99ponkindle thanks 👍🏻 6y
arlenefinnigan @TrishB ooh excellente 6y

Funnily enough it was their treatment of football fans that made me lose respect for the police too.
