Autopsy of a Boring Wife
Autopsy of a Boring Wife | Marie-Renée Lavoie
11 posts | 11 read | 13 to read
Like a Québécois Bridget Jones’s Diary, Marie-Renée Lavoie’s Autopsy of a Boring Wife tells the hysterically funny and ultimately touching tale of forty-eight-year-old Diane, a woman whose husband leaves her and is having an affair because, he says, she bores him. Diane takes the charge to heart and undertakes an often ribald, highly entertaining journey to restoring trust in herself and others that is at the same time an astute commentary on women and girls, gender differences, and the curious institution of marriage in the twenty-first century. All the details are up for scrutiny in this tender, brisk story of the path to recovery. Autopsy of a Boring Wife is a wonderfully fresh and engaging novel of the pitfalls and missteps of an apparently “boring” life that could be any of ours.

I absolutely adored this book. When Diane‘s husband leaves her for a younger woman, she feels her life has fallen apart. This is a book of loss and acceptance, with so much pathos and humour.

The story of an ordinary woman, whose life is pulled apart, told with an abundance of humour and heart. Diane is lovely, far stronger than she thinks and anything but boring. A quick, enjoyable read.

Longlisted for #CanadaReads 2021, I think it's a really good book, but not right for the competition. The Canada Reads selection is meant to be one that every Canadian should read and discuss and this is not that. But it is still worthy of a read.

MsMelissa Nicely done! Will be interesting to see if it makes the short list based on your comments. 4y
TheKidUpstairs @Book_Fiend_Melissa it's interesting, looking at some of the other long list titles, there seems to be a lot of lighter fare. Have you heard the theme? Maybe it's about something to make you laugh of l or about lighter, escapist fare? 4y
MsMelissa I haven‘t looked at the long list in depth yet, so I‘m not sure if the theme has been announced. I always use ‘the book every Canadian should read‘ idea they promote to help me determine what book I think should win. Each year I find at least one or two of the short list choices odd though, in that the books may be good, but there is no reason why everyone should read them. I‘m still mad From The Ashes got booted early last year! 4y
TheKidUpstairs @Book_Fiend_Melissa shortlist has now been announced: https://www.cbc.ca/books/canadareads/meet-the-canada-reads-2021-contenders-1.586... it's a weird mix, definitely a couple odd choices. "Books to Transport You" is the theme. 4y
MsMelissa I guess the theme is designed to take our minds off the pandemic? I have Hench, and the Polk novel could be interesting, but the other three I don‘t know I‘d rush to read. (edited) 4y

I admit, for a “boring†story I found this hard to put down. Up until I got to the end and finished the book, I thought it was autobiographical. Now, realizing that it‘s actually fiction, I think that‘s a compliment because it felt so realistic. There‘s nothing earth-shattering here, but if you‘ve ever been through a divorce, then you are sure to find something here to relate to. Thanks, Hoopla! 4âï¸

I wish it were either slightly darker or more absurd. A solid commute read.

Recovering from surgery stinks. I keep having to fend off Ozzie and Gatsby who just want me to feel better already and maybe if they lay across the incisions that‘d help. 😜 So I‘ve chosen to set down the book that I should be reading but isn‘t diverting my attention and pick up this one that is billed as “wildly entertaining.†Hope they mean it!
