Pickpick

Finally finished this at our #booksandcoffee morning. Excellent general history of Europe from the Renaissance through the Napoleonic era. I got exactly what I was looking for. May take a break until I tackle volume two

I‘m going to have to find a new book for #coffeeandbooks with hubby very soon. Only about 40 pages left in this one. It will definitely be nonfiction, probably a history. Any suggestions?

Centique I‘ll tag a couple of history books I‘ve read and enjoyed in case one appeals to you! This one is very dark but fascinating 5y
Centique This one has very little to do with Jane Austen but amazing details about domestic life in that period 5y
Centique This is a microhistory of a year in England with Shakespeare as the focal point - what he would have been experiencing while writing Lear 5y

Centique And for something very different, focused on how archaeologists try and understand ancient lives based on what they find 5y
ValerieAndBooks @Centique all your recs look good! Lynn did you know Mlodinow has a new one out? 5y
Lynnsoprano @Centique Those both sound so interesting! Back when I had geography in junior high I had to read a book on the archeological expedition that uncovered the Nefertiti artifacts, and I still remember being fascinated. 5y
Lynnsoprano @ValerieAndBooks Thanks, I didn‘t know that! I may get it for Ken for Christmas. Last week he asked me if I would order a book from Amazon for him that I had already bought him for Christmas. So I gave it to him, but now I need something to replace it 😂 5y

After missing several weeks, it‘s great to get back to #coffeeandbooks with hubby. We did two miles on the local fitness trail first, so the blasting AC in Panera feels really good.

#Two4Tuesday
1. I am woefully behind on my Goodreads goal this year, and I have a trip next month that will be wonderful but will probably be a no-reading week. So my two main reading goals are to finish the tagged book and to do our annual buddy read with @ValerieAndBooks which I hope we‘ll start very soon.
2. Lose 5 pounds and make my Fitbit exercise goal every week.

TheSpineView Great goals! 👍😊 5y
Lynnsoprano Wow! Somehow this posted twice, this one without the photo. No idea how this happened. 5y

CoffeeLitNFit I surprisingly just met my GoodReads goal of 25 books and it‘s only September. My goal is to try and read 10-15 more. More reading, less screen time. ♥️📚 5y
Lynnsoprano @CoffeeLitNFit That‘s a resolution I should definitely make 😄 My problem is that Litsy is addictive, and since it‘s all about books I have no trouble justifying it! 5y
CoffeeLitNFit @Lynnsoprano right?! I just discovered the Bookstagram community and this recently. It has consumed some of my reading time. 🤣 (edited) 5y

First chance that hubby and I have had to enjoy #coffeeandbooks since before the hurricane threat. I‘m going to need to get volume 2 of this soon. Only 3 chapters left.

RealBooks4ever Oh that coffee looks good! I haven‘t had mine yet! ☕️ 5y
CoffeeLitNFit I love history!!! Is it a good read? 5y
Lynnsoprano @CoffeeLitNFit It‘s quite readable. It‘s essentially a textbook. It was a recommended read with one of the Great Courses that hubby and I have done since we retired. I studied music history, but I never had enough general history, so it‘s one of my projects in retirement. Welcome to our Litsy family, by the way! 5y

Lynnsoprano @RealBooks4ever For medical reasons I‘m supposed to drink decaf. I love going to Panera because I can put just a splash of hazelnut in my cup and fill up with decaf. It was a great morning. Wish you could join us! 5y
ValerieAndBooks I got a notification that I was tagged but going to this post don‘t see my name 🧐. This looks good— I need to brush up on that area of history! 5y
CoffeeLitNFit Thanks for the feed back and warm welcome!!! I‘ll definitely have to check it out. I especially love European history. I hope you‘re enjoying retirement. 5y
Lynnsoprano @ValerieAndBooks Don‘t know why the tag took you here. I tagged you on another post about this book, and that one posted twice, once with the photo and once without 🤷‍♀️ I referenced our buddy read, which I hope we can start soon. I‘ve worked my way up to the Enlightenment. Since I only read this for #coffeeandbooks with hubby, I‘m pretty pleased with my progress. A lot of what I read today, which also covered the scientific revolution, overlaps with a Great Courses lecture series on science and religion that we are currently watching. It‘s interesting to compare perspectives.

RiverKScottWrites I‘m currently reading Sophie‘s World, which is an excellent primer on philosophy through the ages (edited) 5y
Lynnsoprano @RiverKScottWrites Thanks! I will definitely add that to my list. 5y
Crazeedi I just started a great courses on roku, about birding! So funny you mentioned that. 5y
Lynnsoprano @crazeedi We‘ve done a number of great courses since we retired, mostly history but some religion and science ones as well. Our doctor told both of us that retirement was okay if we didn‘t let our brains turn to mush 😄 5y
Crazeedi @Lynnsoprano how could our brains turn to mush since we read so much?!!😉💗 5y

Remember the old movie, If It‘s Tuesday, This Must Be Belgium? Well, I feel like, if it‘s Tuesday, Lynn and hubby must be out for #booksandcoffee 😂

Susanita I loved that movie and thought of it several times while on the cruise. They had little rugs in the elevators with the day of the week, which turned out to be very helpful! 5y

Happy 4th! Since I‘m still in recovery mode, it‘s a very low key day around here. Decided to do a much overdue #booksandcoffee outing, although I‘m not sure that European history is the usual reading choice for the 4th of July😄

ValerieAndBooks Glad you got out — continue to take it easy 💖! 5y

#booksandcoffee Early morning checkup with blood work at the doctor‘s office this morning meant our #booksandcoffee was breakfast today. I have made it to 16th century France so far😊

I‘m continuing my study of European history to complement what I learned as a music history major. Thanks to @RamsFan1963 and the gift card I won in his giveaway, I got this book that was recommended as a follow up to the Renaissance history that I read last. However, I can‘t remember the last time I saw a book with print this small 😄 I will be reading this for a long time.

Gezemice Great choice! My book on the Wars of the Roses was also very small print. Deceiving! Must be a marketing thing for history books. 6y
RamsFan1963 @Lynnsoprano I'm so glad you found a good book to use your gift card on. 6y
Crazeedi I love my world history and European history classes in college, and American history. Let's just say I love history. Period. 6y

Lynnsoprano @Crazeedi So do I. It‘s been something I‘ve concentrated on since I retired. My masters degree is in music history, and I‘m trying to bring my knowledge of political and cultural history up to the level of my music history knowledge. I‘ve read the Susan Wise Bauers medieval and Renaissance histories, so it‘s time to move to early modern Europe 😄 (edited) 6y
Crazeedi @Lynnsoprano all of it is so interesting, and also very important to understand the past 6y
arubabookwoman I was a music history major too! (Many years ago). But then I went to law school. A group of friends and I have been getting together weekly for several years to teach ourselves art history, and picking up quite a bit of “regular” history along the way. 6y
Lynnsoprano @arubabookwoman I‘ve surprised myself to discover how much “regular” history I picked up with the music history. Plus, one of my professors strongly recommended taking an art history survey, which was one of the smartest things I did. Studying history has been on of my retirement “don‘t let your brain turn to mush “ projects. 6y
