The Little Princess
The Little Princess: The Broadway Play of 1903 | Frances Hodgson Burnett
6 posts | 8 read | 2 to read
Skillfully crafted from her novel "Sara Crew," Frances Hodgson Burnett's own theatrical adaptation of her story became a classic play for children. Expanding the story into a full length dramatic piece, the play was first produced on Broadway in 1903, after a London engagement. Sara finds herself orphaned and penniless living in a London boarding school where she is at the mercy of the cruel headmistress Miss Minchen. After the success of the play, Burnett adapted it into the longer novel "The Little Princess

I love The Secret Garden though my favorite is A Little Princess. There was a wonderful mini series in the 80‘s with Maureen Lipman playing Miss Minchin.

1. Erie, Pennsylvania, USA 2. Still in western Pennsylvania, but not in Erie. 3. I have 2 sisters, 11 and 12 years older than me - the older one lives in the same town in PA, the younger one lives in Virginia. 4. The tagged book. I remember I couldn‘t put it down - not even for supper. #WondrousWednesday

#BookReport #WeeklyForecast. I seem to have the attention span of a gnat right now. I think The Group would be a book I‘d like at any other time but I just couldn‘t keep track of who or what. Shorter and not too intense seems to be what I can handle right now. I may set aside The Long Call for the same reason. Thankful Mansfield Park and HP are chapter a day reads. I hope this doesn‘t last long. 🤞🏼

Cinfhen Agreed, all those girls were SO HARD to keep track of 🙄I‘m not sure I remember who‘s who for today‘s discussion 🤪 4y

Watched a movie adaption of this many times as a small child but never read the book.

Think Sara Crewe is an interesting contrast to Mary Lennox and Cedric Errol. Unlike Mary, she fails to be spoiled rotten. Unlike Cedric, she fails to charm her caretakers.

Strong racist undercurrents. A child reading this might take them at face value instead of understanding the history.
