pickTerrific Mother by Lorrie Moore is a tragic story–written in a prose which is as funny as it's sad and beautiful–of a woman going through grief and eventually overcoming it.
Bonus: It's set in Italy, and there are some brilliant descriptions of food and place.

Often she had to step on them twice—they were large and ran fast. Stepping on them once usually just made then run faster.” 4y
