Queen of the Sea
Queen of the Sea | Dylan Meconis

Cult graphic novelist Dylan Meconis offers a rich reimagining of history in this beautifully detailed hybrid novel loosely based on the exile of Queen Elizabeth I by her sister, Queen Mary. When her sister seizes the throne, Queen Eleanor of Albion is banished to a tiny island off the coast of her kingdom, where the nuns of the convent spend their days peacefully praying, sewing, and gardening. But the island is also home to Margaret, a mysterious young orphan girl whose life is upturned when the cold, regal stranger arrives. As Margaret grows closer to Eleanor, she grapples with the revelation of the island's sinister true purpose as well as the truth of her own past. When Eleanor's life is threatened, Margaret is faced with a perilous choice between helping Eleanor and protecting herself. In a hybrid novel of fictionalized history, Dylan Meconis paints Margaret's world in soft greens, grays, and reds, transporting readers to a quiet, windswept island at the heart of a treasonous royal plot.

Soft pick. I would like to start by saying that I went into this thinking it was a fantasy, even though it‘s only one because it‘s set in a fake world, so already I was disappointed. I also expected it to be YA but it was written more like a middle grade. The explanations of things like what a nun or a martyr is got a little annoying. The art was good and so were the characters, but I also think it could have been shorter. 3.5⭐️

I chose this graphic novel because it was on the npr best of list for this year. It was a good story and I liked the art and the progress and the characters. But it felt very incomplete, like it was only the first part of a larger story.

A gorgeously illustrated, entertaining alternate history inspired by the early years of Queen Elizabeth the First‘s reign, this book is perfect for fans of historical fiction. Easy to see why it‘s appearing on so many “best of” lists. Love the format—which includes sections of traditional text and sections of traditional comics/ graphic novels panels—and the strong narrative. A fun read and good addition to the library.

Just in to the library is a graphic novel that NPR has named one of their favorite comics/graphic novels of the year. It‘s an alternate history inspired by the early years of Queen Elizabeth the First (according to the dust jacket). Looking forward to a good read.

This book was so good that I gave it to my sister the second I finished it, so she could read it too. Thus, I don‘t have any of my own pictures of pages. I had to use some from amazon.

Delightful graphic with real insight into Renaissance-era convent life, inspired by the life of Queen Bess.

Not an especially auspicious day of reading (quantitatively speaking) for #24B4Monday & #SummersEndReadathon but remains, shall we say, one for the books. 🤦🏼‍♀️

This was part of my #bookhaul from the library yesterday. I loved this graphic novel very, very loosely based on the early years of Queen Elizabeth I.

The heat broke last night, and we woke up to 69-degree weather, which means coffee and a book al fresco!

MicheleinPhilly OMG! I‘m so jealous! We have one more day and then my sweaty ass can go outside again! 🙌🏼 5y
TrishB @MicheleinPhilly apparently we‘re hitting 30 degrees this week, which means the country will come to a standstill and we‘ll have drought warnings. 5y

A delightful graphic novel loosely (oh so very loosely) based on Queen Elizabeth I and Queen Mary, Queen of the Sea gives us Margaret, a young girl raised by nuns on an island convent, and the actual adventures she can have in this faraway exile when not only one, but two possible friends arrive, including the standoffish Eleanor, who's been shoved off the throne by her sister. Adored this.

An beautiful graphic novel that‘s a loose reimagining of Elizabeth I and her sister Mary. The art was stunning. My only complaint was that the ending was lackluster. I wanted more!
