Together
Together: A Memoir of a Marriage and a Medical Mishap | Judy Goldman
3 posts | 5 read | 6 to read
A routine procedure left novelist, memoirist, and poet Judy Goldman's husband paralyzed. Together is her unforgettable account of the struggle to regain their "normal" life and a nuanced portrait of a marriage tested. When Judy Goldman's husband of almost four decades reads a newspaper ad for an injection to alleviate back pain, the outpatient procedure sounds like the answer to his longtime backaches. But rather than restoring his tennis game, the procedure leaves him paralyzed from the waist down--a phenomenon none of the doctors the family consults can explain. Overnight, Goldman's world is turned upside down. Though she has always thought of herself as the polite, demure wife opposite her strong, brave husband, Goldman finds herself thrown into a new role as his advocate, navigating byzantine hospital policies, demanding and refusing treatments, seeking solutions to help him win back his independence. Along the way, Goldman flashes back to her memories of their life together. As she tries envision her family's future, she discovers a new, more resilient version of herself. Together is a story of the life we imagine versus the life we lead--an elegant and empathetic meditation on partnership, aging, and, of course, love.

Thanks for sharing and posting this book @Eggs After listening to two VERY LONG audiobooks, I appreciated this no nonsense memoir. When Judy‘s husband undergoes a routine office procedure for back pain they NEVER considered the risks & complications they could encounter. And that makes for a truly compelling listen. It‘s a story of love, marriage and medical traumas that alter their idyllic existence.

Megabooks I‘ve thought about reading this but it sounds very scary! 1y
Cinfhen It was!!! It really made me rethink undergoing any type of “routine” procedure. It‘s ok to pass @Megabooks 1y

This is a fascinating memoir of a couple, Judy and Henry, who married in the 1960s, have a son and daughter and grandchildren. Henry, now retired, in search of relief from back pain, selects a physiatrist who injects steroids into his lower back. What follows is a nightmare of paralysis, blood clots, hypertension, hypotension, severe pain, digestive problems, headaches, depression, neuropathy, years of rehab, and severe loss of independence. ⬇️

Cinfhen Great color match and book sounds fascinating #stacked 1y

3.5 ⭐️ This memoir as it‘s title suggests is about the author‘s marriage & the medical accident that changed their lives. It‘s about coming to terms with life, learning more about who you are & holding on to what is most dear. The in-depth look into her husband‘s medical event will have you advocating for your loved ones in like circumstances. How do you stay calm or should you stay calm when you have real concerns about the care one receives?
