Paper Wife
Paper Wife | Laila Ibrahim
From the bestselling author of Yellow Crocus comes a heart-wrenching story about finding strength in a new world. Southern China, 1923. Desperate to secure her future, Mei Ling's parents arrange a marriage to a widower in California. To enter the country, she must pretend to be her husband's first wife--a paper wife. On the perilous voyage, Mei Ling takes an orphan girl named Siew under her wing. Dreams of a better life in America give Mei Ling the strength to endure the treacherous journey and detainment on Angel Island. But when she finally reaches San Francisco, she's met with a surprise. Her husband, Chinn Kai Li, is a houseboy, not the successful merchant he led her to believe. Mei Ling is penniless, pregnant, and bound to a man she doesn't know. Her fragile marriage is tested further when she discovers that Siew will likely be forced into prostitution. Desperate to rescue Siew, she must convince her husband that an orphan's life is worth fighting for. Can Mei Ling find a way to make a real family--even if it's built on a paper foundation?

Not much on listening to books but having some long drives. While it's caught my attention I find my mind wondering a lot. I'm going to keep going, because I think its me struggling to listen instead of reading it.

Another free Amazon prime pick. A good book, easy read. How many of us would have the strength to leave everyone and everything we know and start completely over when it wasnt even our own choice to do so?

My latest listen 🎧 for my drives to and from work was headed for a so-so rating. It held my interest, but was not memorable until an event toward the end of the story. 2/5⭐️s

This book was both enjoyable and educational. Before reading this book, I had never heard of a “paper wife”. I didn‘t know much about Chinese traditions or culture. This book opened up a new world to me. I enjoyed following Mei Ling‘s journey that started with uncertainty and distrust, and ended with love. Her devotion to her family is admirable. I will admit, I didn‘t expect this book to end the way it did. All in all, it was a good read.

I loved this book! The character development and writing were perfect!
What I Loved: Paper Wife was a story filled with so much determination and pure resolve to make things work and I loved that! Mei Ling continues, time after time, to make choices that will take care of her, and her family. It was so amazing to watch her journey.

I love stories about Chinese immigration that happened in the 1920-30‘s. I don‘t know. It‘s just one of my ‘things‘. This book fit the bill perfectly. Oh yeah, it‘s free with an Amazon Unlimited subscription.

SheilaChew I love stories like this too! 5y

A mother's love, bravery, and ferocious will to protect her family. Rich with Chinese and American culture, history, and disturbing details.
