The Quest for Queen Mary
The Quest for Queen Mary | Hugo Vickers, James Pope-Hennessy
4 posts | 1 read | 15 to read
'A scary portrait of put-upon servants and potty aristos ... this is arguably the most riotously funny volume published this year' Max Hastings, Sunday Times 'One of the funniest, most eccentric books of the year' Craig Brown, Mail on Sunday When James Pope-Hennessy began his work on Queen Mary's official biography, it opened the door to meetings with royalty, court members and retainers around Europe. The series of candid observations, secrets and indiscretions contained in his notes were to be kept private for 50 years. Now published in full for the first time and edited by the highly admired royal biographer Hugo Vickers, this is a riveting, often hilarious portrait of the eccentric aristocracy of a bygone age. Giving much greater insight into Queen Mary than the official version, and including sharply observed encounters with, among others, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, the Duke of Gloucester, and a young Queen Elizabeth, The Quest for Queen Mary is set to be a classic of royal publishing.

Using some of the last days of my surgery recovery to get in some reading that I‘ve been wanting to do, as I‘ve spent the majority the time not sleeping on school. I‘m only getting 2 weeks off of work, so I‘d better enjoy the non-exhausted time while I have it!

Here is that WSJ article I mentioned about royalty bios @LeahBergen and @shawnmooney and I want to read them all, including Robert Hardman‘s! Have you read any of the others?

LeahBergen That was an interesting read; thank you! I haven‘t read any of the others (yet! 😉) 6y
LauraBeth I ❤️ royal bios 6y
ValerieAndBooks @LeahBergen so much has been written about the royals that we‘ll always be behind 😊. Unrelated question— what do you call the clear dust jacket protectors you use? Recommendations? My son wants to cover some of his books with this material. 6y

rubyslippersreads This looks great! 👑 6y
LeahBergen @NovelGirl82 @JacqMac It‘s been sending us down all sorts of Google rabbit holes as to “who‘s who”. 😆 6y
LeahBergen @saresmoore Aww! 😆😆 Litsy FOMO is something I deal with on a daily basis! 6y
LeahBergen @rubyslippersreads I‘m thinking this is definitely your sorta read! 👍🏻 6y
Dragon Stacking 👑 6y
CarolynM On my TBR! 6y
LeahBergen @Dragon @CarolynM I‘m really enjoying the bits about obscure (and super loony) European royalty. 😆😆 6y
LauraBeth Oh my - I didn‘t know the backstory of this book until now! I‘m going to need the juicy bits! 6y
saresmoore There are just too many good books! 6y
rubyslippersreads @LeahBergen It sure is! 😊👑 6y
rubyslippersreads @LeahBergen @NovelGirl82 @JacqMac @shawnmooney Is Queen Mary the one who “helped herself “ to any little item she fancied while visiting? (Which meant hiding your silver snuffboxes, etc. before she arrived. 😂) 6y
rubyslippersreads @saresmoore There are. I also want to read 6y
LeahBergen @rubyslippersreads Well, it appears that she had that reputation but it‘s not necessarily a proven fact. She DID expect her host to gift her with any tchotchkes she admired, though ... which led to everyone hiding their favourite antiques when she visited. 😆😆 6y
LeahBergen @LauraBeth There hasn‘t been anything TOO salacious yet (other than a few lords and ladies being caught “doing it” by royals). I‘m really enjoying the bits on the wacky ones like Lady Sybil Grant who, in later life, “spent much time in a caravan or up a tree, communicating with her butler through a megaphone”. That‘s my kinda lady! 😆😆 (edited) 6y
Moray_Reads Lady Sybil sounds fabulous! What's the point of being in the aristocracy is you can't really invest in being eccentric? 6y
LeahBergen @Moray_Reads Exactly! 😆😆 6y
Suet624 There is no way in the world I will ever be able to read all the books that Litsy (and you) have introduced me to. Gah!!!! 6y
LeahBergen @Suet624 It‘s awful, isn‘t it?? 😫 6y
ValerieAndBooks Awesome!! I read about this book in the weekend‘s WSJ and thought, I must read it!! Especially now that you and @shawnmooney are enjoying it so much. 6y
LeahBergen @ValerieAndBooks We‘re having such a good time with it! 👏🏻👏🏻 6y
