An Unkindness Of Ravens
An Unkindness Of Ravens: (A Wexford Case) | Ruth Rendell
5 posts | 4 read | 3 to read
The thirteenth book to feature the classic crime-solving detective, Chief Inspector Wexford. The raven: not a particularly predatory bird, but far from soft and submissive, adopted as the symbol of a militant feminist group... Detective Chief Inspector Wexford thought he was merely doing a neighbourly good deed when he agreed to talk to Joy Williams about her missing husband. He certainly didn't expect to be investigating a most unusual homicide. Rodney Williams was neither handsome nor wealthy but he had an unerring eye for a pretty girl and when he disappeared and two other men were later attacked by a young woman, Wexford couldn't help wondering if there was a connection. If there wasn't, where was Rodney Williams and why had he vanished? He had committed no crime apart from telling his wife the occasional lie...

Rodney Williams is missing - turns up dead. Wexford investigates - overall a good story - one major issue (see spoiler below) and plot could have been written without it - not necessary for a satisfying explanation/ending.
Plan to finish 2 more books this month for #BookSpinBingo @TheAromaofBooks and then focusing on #Scarathlon #TeamWhoYaGonnaCall 👻 @FlynnDewey
Make a great day everyone 🍂

bthegood daughter accuses father of raping her - but made it up - this part of the story bothered me - not even part of a motive and seems muddled as to why she did this - other than being “sociopath“ - written in 1985 so seems author would have been a bit more sensitive to this issue and how women face doubt each day when they accuse someone - 1y
TheAromaofBooks Great progress!! And that does seem like a weird plot device to use, just to illustrate that she's a terrible person... seems like there are plenty of other ways to make that happen. 1y
bthegood @TheAromaofBooks exactly!! thanks for hosting - 1y

Pickpick

Joy Williams, a neighbour, asks Wexford to look into the disappearance of her husband. At first he assumes the husband has run off with another woman, but evidence mounts to show that something more sinister has happened.

An intriguing plot with a solution which I don't think anybody writing now would come up with.

bthegood intriguing - added to my TBR - thanks - 2y

Audiobook from Libby app. Inspector Wexford investigates the disappearance of a bigamist and womanizer but who is worse, the man or the women in his life. As always excellent characters and plotting from Rendell. Highly recommend this series.

AmyG Ruth Rendell is a must read. 6y
