RUR

R.U.R. - written in 1920, premiered in Prague in 1921, and first performed in New York in 1922 - garnered worldwide acclaim for its author and popularized the word 'robot'. Mass-produced as efficient laborers to serve man, Capek's Robots are an android product-they remember everything but think of nothing new. But the Utopian life they provide ultimately lacks meaning, and the humans they serve stop reproducing. When the Robots revolt, killing all but one of their masters, they must strain to learn the secret of self-duplication. It is not until two Robots fall in love and are christened "Adam" and "Eve" by the last surviving human that Nature emerges triumphant.

Not the modern concept of robots, but where the word originated. Read public Project Gutenberg version because this play is that old! And it shows. 1920s attitudes exhibited towards women, outdated/racial slur language for indigenous and black people used. Pretty dark content, reflecting on humanity's faults, what happens when you only view a being for how it can produce value, if it acts how you expect. 'Superior' being rhetoric creeped me out.

If we're talking about Inheritance (and its many androids) why not consider R.U.R.? I read this for my Robots in Fiction class and this is possibly the first instance of androids!

How Westworld (the series) copies and follows RUR much more closely than Westworld (the movie) or Westworld (the book).

rretzler I read RUR 40+ years ago - I think it‘s time for a reread! 6y
TsundokuAleax The theatre I work for did a production of RUR a few years ago! It was a dream of our artistic director for years. Our favorite debate was if Dolman was human or robot. 6y

I have been a bit MIA of late due to work and this wonderful show that I am working on. This is a scene that was added by the director. The robot war happens off stage in the script but we staged it. It is an amazing and intense scene. Today we close and I will be kinda sad to put this one to bed. But at least I will be able to finish my beta read and dig into my TBR pile.

One of the specialty props for this show, is a diagram of the robots. I have been reading through the notes on this and they are fascinating and hilarious. We are hopefully going to have them for sale because the audience loves the display on we have by the bar. #theatrelife #theatre

This past weekend, the theatre that I house manage opened this play. Wow! It is a brilliant play written in the 1920s about technology and our reliance on it. It is the original robots over throw their masters story. I will be posting show and set photos in the coming weeks because this show is something. #theatre #plays
