Accidents of Marriage
Accidents of Marriage: A Novel | Randy Susan Meyers
4 posts | 9 read | 17 to read
“A complex and captivating tale” (The Boston Globe) which takes an engrossing look at the darker side of a marriage—and at how an ordinary family responds to an extraordinary crisis, forcing a couple to decide when a marriage is too broken to fix. Maddy, a social worker, is trying to balance her career and three children, but her husband’s verbal furies have made the family wary and frightened. Where once his fiery passion had been reserved for defending his clients, now he’s lashing out at all of them. She vacillates between tiptoeing around him and asserting herself for the sake of their kids—keeping a fragile peace—until the rainy day when they’re together in the car and Ben’s volatile temper gets the best of him, leaving Maddy in the hospital fighting for her life. Randy Susan Meyers takes us inside the hearts and minds of her characters, alternating among the perspectives of Maddy, Ben, and their fourteen-year-old daughter, Emma. A People magazine Book Pick, Accidents of Marriage is a “beautifully written, poignant, and thought-provoking novel” (Kirkus Reviews, starred review) that will resonate deeply with women from all walks of life, ultimately revealing the challenges of family, faith, and forgiveness.

Mehso-so

This book was relentlessly heartbreaking. I had trouble connecting with a lot of the characters. It had an important story to tell, but I didn't find myself caring as much as I should have.

Mamashep I had the same reaction to this one when I read it and I felt like I was the only one! 8y

Up next, a book I interlibrary loaned in to help me with my TBR Randomiser Challenge on Goodreads. Looks pretty good.

BookNerdBritt That's such a good idea for a challenge! My TBR list is insane, and I tend to forget about the older ones on there. 9y
Sweettartlaura Ooooh, how does this Randomiser challenge work? 9y
HardcoverHarlot @Sweettartlaura I'm part of the Goodreads group 2016 Reading Challenge. One of the yearly challenge options is a TBR Randomiser challenge that requires you to sort your TBR list on Goodreads in a random order, then pick how many you plan to read for the year. I love it! 9y

Sweettartlaura Are you talking about the general Goodreads Challenge, where you set a goal # of books for the year? I didn't know there were options! 😊. But you've given me an idea... 9y
HardcoverHarlot @Sweettartlaura there's a group called 2016 Reading Challenge that has lots of mini-challenges within it. 9y
Sweettartlaura Thanks, @HardcoverHarlot ! I'm more than halfway through my 2016 goal & have the rest pretty mapped out. But I'll look for it next year, for sure. 9y
SaraFair That may be a good idea for me too. I love researching something to read for the categories , but it is making my TBR bigger and bigger. 9y
