"An indulgent and exhilarating adventure... The only cure is to finish it." Lyndsay Ely, author of Gunslinger Girl After unwittingly helping her mother poison King Louis XIV, seventeen-year-old alchemist Mirabelle Monvoisin is forced to see her mothers Shadow Society in a horrifying new light: theyre not heroes of the people, as theyve always claimed to be, but murderers. Herself included. Mira tries to ease her guilt by brewing helpful curatives, but her hunger tonics and headache remedies cannot right past wrongs or save the dissenters her mother vows to purge. Royal bastard Josse de Bourbon is more kitchen boy than fils de France. But when the Shadow Society assassinates the Sun King and half of the royal court, he must become the prince he was never meant to be in order to save his injured sisters and the petulant dauphin. Forced to hide in the sewers beneath the city, Josses hope of reclaiming Paris seems impossibleuntil his path collides with Mirabelles. Shes a deadly poisoner. Hes a bastard prince. They are sworn enemies, yet they form a tenuous pact to unite the commoners and former nobility against the Shadow Society. But can a rebellion built on mistrust ever hope to succeed?

I just finished An Affair of Poisons, and I loved it. It's an alternate history tale of a Shadow Society that poisons King Louis XIV and then takes power. There are two perspectives, one told by the daughter of the Shadow Society leader, and a bastard prince who is fighting to save his sisters. The two meet and try to take back the city in the name of the boy's brother, the dauphin Louis. I thought it was a beautiful story with strong characters.

Well this was a monumental disappointment of a book. Simply put: you've read this book before. I've read this book before. Anyone who has read a fiction book has read this book before. Despite the concept of poisoning King Louis around the time of the revolution, this book is very basic. The main female is into alchemy but spends 99% of the book swooning or being the most sense human imaginable. It's the least memorable book possible in 2019.

mdemanatee I personally also didn‘t find the characters developed at all as people. Bummed because the concept of this book sounded super exciting. 6y

Fun, alternate history of King Louis XIV. I love how much was based in factual evidence but events were changed. I read this book super fast and I think that kept my interest high. Great main characters and the pace moved. Solid YA pick!

Fun YA historical which offers a fantasy, alternative retelling of alchemy, murder, La Voisin & more in 17th c. France. Mira is an alchemist & a poisoner. After the deadly poison she brews to kill an abusive duke is actually used to kill the Sun King & much of his court, she must choose sides as her mother wages war. Josse, the bastard son of the king, rescues his royal siblings but they can‘t get far without help. Adventure, romance, rebellion!

One last new library book to preview...at least for now. I‘m one chapter in and can only hope the remainder of the book lives up to the first chapter. Loved the beginning and I‘m excited to read more. 🤞it‘s good!
