All Over the Map: A Cartographic Odyssey | Greg Miller, Betty Mason
4 posts | 2 read | 9 to read
Created for map lovers by map lovers, this rich book explores the intriguing stories behind maps across history and illuminates how the art of cartography thrives today. In this visually stunning book, award-winning journalists Betsy Mason and Greg Miller--authors of the National Geographic cartography blog "All Over the Map"--explore the intriguing stories behind maps from a wide variety of cultures, civilizations, and time periods. Based on interviews with scores of leading cartographers, curators, historians, and scholars, this is a remarkable selection of fascinating and unusual maps. This diverse compendium includes ancient maps of dragon-filled seas, elaborate graphics picturing unseen concepts and forces from inside Earth to outer space, devious maps created by spies, and maps from pop culture such as the schematics to the Death Star and a map of Westeros from Game of Thrones. If your brain craves maps--and Mason and Miller would say it does, whether you know it or not--this eye-opening visual feast will inspire and delight.

I've very confused about our flight path... I mean, flying into Canada can not be the best way to get to Denver. #GetOutTheMap

#GetOutTheMap or get out a giant book of maps. I reviewed this National Geographic coffee-table tome & intended to give it away as a Christmas gift but liked it too much & kept it for myself. 🤗Maps of all sorts--real places to fictional/fantasy & even the Hawaiian ahupua'a--parcels of land divided so owners had a section that ran from the mountains to the sea. Fascinating & a great book for history buffs & map aficionados.

Cinfhen I love coffee table books!!! Glad u kept this one for yourself xx it‘s a beauty 5y

2nd of two National Geographic books I reviewed on the blog this week is a big beautiful book-perfect for map geeks & explorers. I love maps & maps in books & this book has maps of cities, wars, landscapes, science, waterways, art & imagination & more including 19th century Hawaiian Ahupua'a (land parcel) maps, the Death Star & lands of Game of Thrones. SO MANY MAPS!🤓I paired it with hearty Butter-Toasted Apricot Oatmeal.😋
