Pump Six and Other Stories
Pump Six and Other Stories | Paolo Bacigalupi
9 posts | 10 read | 16 to read
Paolo Bacigalupi's debut collection demonstrates the power and reach of the science fiction short story. Social criticism, political parable, and environmental advocacy lie at the center of Paolo's work. Each of the stories herein is at once a warning, and a celebration of the tragic comedy of the human experience. The eleven stories in Pump Six represent the best of Paolo's work, including the Hugo nominee "Yellow Card Man," the Nebula-and Hugo-nominated story "The People of Sand and Slag," and the Sturgeon Award-winning story "The Calorie Man." The title story is original to this collection. With this book, Paolo Bacigalupi takes his place alongside SF short fiction masters Ted Chiang, Kelly Link and others, as an important young writer that directly and unabashedly tackles today's most important issues. Skyhorse Publishing, under our Night Shade and Talos imprints, is proud to publish a broad range of titles for readers interested in science fiction (space opera, time travel, hard SF, alien invasion, near-future dystopia), fantasy (grimdark, sword and sorcery, contemporary urban fantasy, steampunk, alternative history), and horror (zombies, vampires, and the occult and supernatural), and much more. While not every title we publish becomes a "New York Times" bestseller, a national bestseller, or a Hugo or Nebula award-winner, we are committed to publishing quality books from a diverse group of authors.

Mehso-so

I know that most short story collections have hits and misses but this is so overwhelmingly bleak that it kind of detracted from the craft of the writer. I was horrified by at least one story but enjoyed a couple as well. I think if real life weren't such a dumpster fire this wouldn't have hit so hard and been such a bummer.

I feel like now that the devastating story is behind me this book is moving along at a much better pace. This is probably the first story I‘ve really enjoyed. Probably because it‘s library/archive adjacent.

Big shoutout to @RamsFan1963 for giving me the heads up about how brutal this story is. I totally would have thrown the book across the room if I hadn‘t been mentally prepared ahead of time. It was especially tough reading this with my dog hanging out with me.

RamsFan1963 Yeah after I saw the dog in your previous post I was thinking "oh no!" ? 1y
HeyT @RamsFan1963 I don't think I can ever take my dog to the beach now to be honest (edited) 1y

There was enough shade on the patio today to enjoy the soft breeze while I read. Rolo decided he needed to sunbathe instead.

RamsFan1963 What did you think of the story "The People of Sand and Slag"? Did it make you want to throw the book across the room? It did me the first time I read it. 1y
HeyT @RamsFan1963 I haven't gotten to it yet but I'll certainly brace myself. 1y

The monthly reminder about #BookSpin has arrived so here's my list. I normally post the drawer/shelfie but too lazy to mess with the camera right now. Newcomers to the list this month are Pushing Ice and Hyperion. Fingers crossed the chunky bois aren't drawn because I am super busy the next couple months.
@TheAromaofBooks

Lucy_Anywhere So many good books on this list! I really liked The Black Prism - the first 100 pages or so are sloooooooow but once you get through them, it‘s a great story! 3y
RaeLovesToRead Hyperion 🥰🥰🥰 3y
TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!!! 3y
RamsFan1963 Pump Six and Other Stories is a really good book, but man the first story is so harsh I almost bailed. 3y

Pickpick

A well written series of near future science fiction stories set in the US. Not as intense as his Water Knife novel but every bit as convincing and memorable. I‘ve even re-read several of the stories.

#novemberbythenumbers #six

This short story collection has so much great stuff in it, including the pictured story, which is one of the best sf stories I‘ve ever read. Haven‘t listened to this podcast version yet.

An excellent but bleak short story collection. Guessing more than one of these will stick with me for a long time.

Nothing exceptionally scary on my #AllHallowsRead TBR, cuz I'm just trying to finish stuff up before #NaNoWriMo starts ;) 👻

@Litsy

BookishMarginalia #NaNoWriMo rocks! I did it twice with my students at my former school 8y
twohectobooks @BookishMarginalia it really does! I've attempted it for over ten years now! 8y
8leagueboot Agreed. I don't tend to get a lot of reading done in November... 8y
