Our Friends from Frolix 8 | Philip K. Dick
5 posts | 3 read | 5 to read
This satirical adventure from Philip K. Dick deals with issues of power, class, and politics, set in a world ruled by big-brained elites. In Our Friends from Frolix 8, the world is run by an elite few. And what determines whether one is part of the elite isnt wealth or privilege, but brains. As children, every citizen of Earth is tested; some are found to be super-smart New Men and some are Unusuals, with various psychic powers. The vast majority are Undermen, performing menial jobs in an overpopulated world. Nick Appleton is an Underman, content to go with the flow and eke out an existence as a tire regroover. But after his son is classified as an Underman, Appleton begins to question the hierarchy. Strengthening his resolve, and energizing the resistance movement, is news that the great resistance leader Thors Provoni is returning from a trip to the furthest reaches of space. And hes brought help: a giant, indestructible alien.

Mehso-so

This typical late period PKD- characters come and go through a loosely unhinged story line. There are echoes of his tighter more straightforward novels, but overall it meanders from a point to an end neither of which we really care about. The ridiculous naming doesn‘t help either. However, ever a fan, this picks into the 3 1/2 star range because when/if you give yourself over to it, the topsey-turvey world somehow comes into focus.

Creadnorthey Ubik hands down though it has a lot to do with the time period when I read it and the fact that it was one of the first PDKs I read. 6y

dystopianaut @Creadnorthey i think ubik is probably my favorite so far, too! 🖤 but it‘s so hard to choose just one!!! 😩 have you also read the ubik screenplay? 6y
Creadnorthey No figures it would be the same... what about it? 6y
dystopianaut @Creadnorthey i haven‘t read it yet but i plan to! supposedly the ending differs a bit from the original and there‘s additional scenes & more humor. based on interviews with PKD, it seems like he was really proud of it so i look forward to reading it! 🖤 6y
Creadnorthey I‘m about to start reading this... tell me is this a relatively straightforward PKD or not- I need more story less weird right now... recommend?🖤 5y
