“But Hildilid was too tired from fighting the night to enjoy the day“
I would use this book in my classroom to teach children not to be scared of nighttime. It is important that children accept the night so they can get their sleep and be ready for the day.
This story is an award winning book about an old lady named Hildilid. She hates night time, she trys everything to get rid of the night. By morning, she was too tired of fighting the night to enjoy the day.

Some books are timeless. For this book, the story itself, and the illustrations are timeless, but the wording to tell the story dates itself. And feels lacking because of age.
"Hildilid's Night" (by Cheli Duran Ryan and illustrated by Arnold Lobel) has won the Caldecott Award for being a light-hearted MF folktale for students to read independently (IR).
In this black and white picture book, readers learn that Hildilid hates the nighttime more than anything in the world; she goes to extreme lengths to get rid of the night. No matter how many attempts Hildilid makes to banish the nighttime, the nighttime continues to
This SF/F Caldecott Award Winning book was published in 1971. It was truly an inspiring book to read about never giving up, but it also had it‘s sad realization. This book is about an old lady who despised the night because she was afraid of it. She would spit at the night, shake her fist at it, tied it up with vines but the night took no notice. Later on the sun came out and she was tired, so she went to sleep.
I enjoy this book because there is a lesson within it. We shouldn‘t try to force things to happen but rather enjoy life for what it is. It is important to take time to appreciate all aspects of life.
This book is a 1972 Caldecott Honor book and was illustrated by Arnold Lobel. It was published by Collier Books. It is about a lady named Hildilid who hates the night. She spends the entire book trying to get rid of it until she exhausts herself and decides to simply ignore the night. It is the moment she turns her back on the night, when the sun decides to come out. At that point the woman is too tired to enjoy the day.
“Hildilid sheared the night like a sheep, but all that dropped from the sky was a little cloud.”
It had a really unique way of showing how the main character tries to keep the night away, and how after her efforts exhausted her, she slept all day. Overall, a cute way of teaching kids not to be scared of the dark.
It is a book that appeals to children because it shows them to not be fearful of the night or dislike bedtime. The language is written “up” to children. The illustrations show the main characters struggles and actions very well and were all black because it was nighttime. Illustrated by Arnold Lobel and published in 1971.
#WitchyReads Day 27: Hildilid lives in the high hills near #Hex(ham) and she hated “moths and stars and shadows and sleep” all because she loathes the night. She spends the entire evening chasing the night away: from sweeping it out of her hut and over the hills of Hexham, to cramming the night into a sack, and shearing it like a sheep from the clouds in the skies.
