GI Brides: The Wartime Girls Who Crossed the Atlantic for Love | Duncan Barrett, Nuala Calvi
4 posts | 7 read | 15 to read
For readers enchanted by the bestsellers The Astronaut Wives Club, The Girls of Atomic City, and Summer at Tiffanys, an absorbing tale of romance and resiliencethe true story of four British women who crossed the Atlantic for love, coming to America at the end of World War II to make a new life with the American servicemen they married. The friendly invasion of Britain by over a million American G.I.s bewitched a generation of young women deprived of male company during the Second World War. With their exotic accents, smart uniforms, and aura of Hollywood glamour, the G.I.s easily conquered their hearts, leaving British boys fighting abroad green with envy. But for girls like Sylvia, Margaret, Gwendolyn, and even the skeptical Rae, American soldiers offered something even more tantalizing than chocolate, chewing gum, and nylon stockings: an escape route from Blitz-ravaged Britain, an opportunity for a new life in affluent, modern America. Through the stories of these four women, G.I. Brides illuminates the experiences of war brides who found themselves in a foreign culture thousands of miles away from family and friends, with men they hardly knew. Some struggled with the isolation of life in rural America, or found their soldier less than heroic in civilian life. But most persevered, determined to turn their wartime romance into a lifelong love affair, and prove to those back home that a Hollywood ending of their own was possible. G.I. Brides includes an eight-pages insert that features 45-black-and-white photos.

It started off a little predictable, but then transformed into real heartfelt stories about the lives of 4 woman who came to the US after world war 2 to meet their fiancé/husbands. Their stories were moving and I felt strong emotions for the characters. It made me appreciative of the many comforts I have today. The women were inspirational as they endured many hardships. Every reader can relate to some of the trials of life found in their stories.

The incredible true story of 4 women who married US soldiers who were stationed in Britain during WWII. These extremely strong women had to wait while their husbands were sent back to the US after the war. Many of them travelled pregnant and/or with small children across an ocean to a strange country to find their new husbands weren't always complete truthful about everything. This book was so good I couldn't put it down!!

I just finished reading this a few weeks ago, and I was blown away by these #kickassheroines. They survived WW II, polio, alcoholism, abuse, and moving to another country and still they thrived. These women are definitely an inspiration to women everywhere! #seasonsreadings2016 📚💂🏻‍♀️🌍✈️

Just started it and I CAN NOT put it down. I can truly say I have never thought about all the British and Irish women who met their American husbands as soldiers, and what it must have been like to cross the ocean and start a new life in a new country. So incredibly interesting to see how these strong women lived and loved. Plus the photos in the middle help bring the stories to life!
