Pickpick

In a far future Earth, humanity has divided into two tribes: the city of Diaspar, whose residents are immortal but impotent, and those who live outside the city, vital but mortal. Alvin is the first child to be born into Diaspar in seven thousand years, and has a boy's curiosity to learn what lies outside the city. The setting is more interesting than the characters but fortunately it's *very* interesting, and Clarke's spare prose is just lovely.
