Besides, if you were one half evil, wouldn’t you want to know about the other half? In the scorching summer of 1976, Robyn spends her days swimming at the Lido and tagging after her brother. It’s the perfect holiday – except for the crying women her mum keeps bringing home. As the heatwave boils on, tensions in the town begin to simmer. Everyone is gossiping about her mum, a strange man is following her around, and worst of all, no one will tell Robyn the truth. But this town isn’t good at keeping secrets… Twelve years later, Robyn returns home, to a house that has stood empty for years and a town that hasn’t moved on, forced to confront the mystery that haunted her that summer. And atone for the part she played in it.

Call me a grumpy old grouchbag but boy am I getting fed up of the dual timeline format! This one was particularly annoying as both strands were obfuscated rather than having one hook you with hints & clues while the other has the gradual juicy reveals. Just couldn't get a handle on what was going on til right at the end so felt little sympathy for the characters. The 2 MCs were unconvincing as well, their motivations vague & behaviour random.

Butterfinger I don't care for this format either. 5y
TheAromaofBooks I don't mind the dual timeline as long as I can see a connection between the two. When it feels like two completely separate, equally boring stories, it's kind of pointless! 5y
ravenlee I feel like it‘s been grossly overdone. 5y
Amie I'm tired of dual timelines, too. I love historical fiction, but its seems like almost every historical fiction book has to have a dual timeline now and it's kind of annoying. I've enjoyed some books with a dual timeline, but it's not always done well and it's not always necessary to the story. 5y

Pickpick

A Little Bird Told Me is an impressive debut novel. The story of a family tragedy & its aftermath is narrated from the perspective of Robyn at the age of 9, and 12 years later, as she searches for the truth.

"No, Little Bird , never , never give into a bully. You never give in because they won‘t stop, and they won‘t just go away, and they won‘t change , and, before you know it," she stops herself and takes a big breath, "well, it gets worse." ... Mum told me we shouldn‘t keep secrets from each other. Then she kept the biggest one of all.
