Kylara Vatta is the only daughter in a family full of sons, and her fathers only child to buck tradition by choosing a military career instead of joining the family business. For Ky, its no contest: Even running the prestigious Vatta Transport Ltd. shipping concern cant hold a candle to shipping out as an officer aboard an interstellar cruiser. Its adventure, not commerce, that stirs her soul. And despite her familys misgivings, there can be no doubt that a Vatta in the service will prove a valuable asset. But with a single error in judgment, it all comes crumbling down. Expelled from the Academy in disgraceand returning home to her humiliated family, a storm of high-profile media coverage, and the gaping void of her own futureKy is ready to face the inevitable onslaught of anger, disappointment, even pity. But soon after opportunitys door slams shut, Ky finds herself with a ticket to ride and a shot at redemptionas captain of a Vatta Transport ship. Its a simple assignment: escorting one of the Vatta fleets oldest ships on its final voyage . . . to the scrapyard. But keeping it simple has never been Kys style. And even though her father has provided a crew of seasoned veterans to baby-sit the fledgling captain on her maiden milk run, they cant stop Ky from turning the routine mission into a risky venturein the name of turning a profit for Vatta Transport, of course. By snapping up a lucrative delivery contract defaulted on by a rival company, and using part of the proceeds to upgrade her condemned vehicle, Ky aims to prove shes got more going for her than just her familys famous name. But business will soon have to take a backseat to bravery, when Kys change of plans sails her and the crew straight into the middle of a colonial war. For all her commercial savvy, its her military training and born-soldiers instincts that Ky will need to call on in the face of deadly combat, dangerous mercenaries, and violent mutiny. . . . #BookReport
Once again I went off forecast and binged a series lol. I blame my autism/adhd for hyper focusing on it.

#WeeklyForecast
Goal is to finish the Vatta‘s War series and then work on my BookSpin backlist. Fingers crossed. Although I got a new reading buddy (dog) that I‘m trying to integrate with my cats so who know what my reading time will be like.

I found this to be great fun even though I'm not normally a mil sci fi person. I think we get to see Ky grow as a person while adjusting to the fact that her life has done a complete 180 from where she thought it would be and she's managed to fall into a pretty serious adventure.

This has good reviews but the plot develops too slowly and it became so boring I set it aside. I will not continue the series.

rwmg Yeah, I couldn't finish it either 3y

Starting with "Trading in Danger" by Elizabeth Moon this five-book series, Vatta's War, follows Kylara Vatta, a recently-expelled space academy student whose first trading mission (her family is a big trading company) goes off the rails.

This series was really good. Easy to read with good world-building and plot. High stakes here and I definitely cried in at least one scene.

Absolutely my kind of space opera. Scrappy Klara Vatta is forced to abandon her military training and instead captains one of her family's old cargo vessels in search of trade and profit. Every bit of her quick thinking is required as they end up in the middle of a war zone.
Ky is great, quick-witted and competent, but also has enough of a chip on her shoulder to keep her flawed and interesting. Can't wait to move on to the next in the series.

I got this book on the strength of the first chapter but half way through chapter 3 it's trembling on the edge of DNF. I can't see me reading the whole series of 7

ljuliel I like how you put that. If it‘s trembling on the edge of a DNF cliff, and small rocks are falling down the side. I‘d kick it over the edge and find something on firmer ground. (edited) 5y
rwmg @ljuliel Yes, after another couple of chapters I've kicked it off 5y
ljuliel I hope you find something more to your liking now. ✨ 5y

Had a lot of good points but wasn't my favorite space opera ever. Do love this cover, exactly how I pictured Ky Vatta.

Getting back into this after a few days' break. It's not the most terribly compelling space opera but I LOVE the main character. Kylara (Ky) Vatta is incredibly competent as fitting for her background of military training.

rwmg I've got this on my virtual TBR shelf. Do I need to move it up? 7y
8leagueboot Have you read Ninefox Gambit? It has a sharp, highly competent lady space captain and it is such a great book 🌌 7y
