The Heart of War
The Heart of War: Misadventures in the Pentagon | Kathleen J. McInnis
2 posts | 1 read | 1 to read
The Devil Wears Prada meets Catch-22; a novel about a womans journey from academic peacenik to national security hawk working under the Dragon Lady of the Pentagon. Dr. Heather Reilly has been an anti-war activist since her brother died fighting the Taliban. But her crushing student loans drive her to consider a fellowship in the Pentagon, and the possibility of working on a peace plan for Afghanistan has her hooked. On her first day, however, her position is eliminated and shes shuffled to a war-fighting office focusing on Russian aggression. Its a job for which she has no experience and deep moral conflict, putting men and women in uniform in harms way. Shes also working for Ariane Fletchera woman so terrifying, she eats generals for breakfast. Despite the Pentagons insane bureaucracy, petty power struggles, and endless (militarized) rules, Heather doesnt just succeedshe thrives. Its an awesome duty to protect men and women downrange, and even the boss from hell cant taint her new understanding of her brothers sacrifice and her own calling to national service. But her successes come at the expense of her personal life, and she learns the hard way that small mistakes can have major consequences in the Department of Defense.

Husband and I went out ALONE for the first time in at least 6 months. Went to our local indie bookstore and picked up these 2. As I was looking at the tagged book, said husband casually remarks that he used to hang out with the author during his high school/college days!

Biensoul Kathleen and I were buddies in college! Can‘t wait to read her book! She‘s awesome! 💜 6y
AmberWB @Biensoul So awesome! Both Nick and the bookstore owner said she was “a character.” 😊 I think that means this should be a good read. 😁 6y
